We’ll be out at UC for our Campus visit on August 5th, while staying at the Hampton Inn. After getting the official tour, what do we need to do to get the real student feel for campus and off-campus life including eatery and entertainment options? My daughter will be there to learn primarily, but I want as complete a picture as possible from an overnight visit. We’re heading in from Chicago at 3 in the morning to make it there for a bit of time to spare for a 10am start time. My daughter, by the way is interested in Interior Design and we’re going to meet with Jim Postell and show him her portfolio. I’m interested on any suggestions anyone might have that would allow us to get the most from our visit.

No, I don’t think that’s the case, but if he, for some reason, would prefer that, I would, of course comply. I don’t really see a problem with my being there during a review of her portfolio, do you? While I’m confident in my daughter’s abilities to “handle it”, that’s not the issue. As for not being anywhere near the building, I believe your viewpoint is a bit extreme. Just stating the obvious. Thanks for listening.

I’m a DAAP student from chicago who just finished his first year in the architecture program (the same foundation year as interior design). i liked it a lot but found that most DAAPers don’t make it off campus that much.

There is always the small strip along calhoun street that people go to, and you might want to wander into Plaza at Clifton & Calhoun. That’s where she’ll be getting a lot of her supplies during the year. Greek row is along Clifton. People occasionally walk down to Ludlow but not very often (its kind of a hike, but a nice walk with company). Taza is a wonderful coffee shop on Jefferson where some DAAP students relax, work on some gen-ed homework, and occasionally catch a small concert. The coffee is great too, if you’re a coffee person.

further from campus you can visit the Over the Rhine neighborhood or head over to Findley market, a great local food spot. Atomic #10 is a thrift store some UC kids go to. I also like Casablanca vintage, and Mount St Adams is really nice for dinner a view. These places are all pretty far off campus though, and UC students only go out there every once in a while.

that’s really all i can think of in terms of the vibe of campus. Regarding the portfolio review, i know i did all of mine by myself. i did not show my portfolio to UC, however, so i do not know how they deal with the situation. I don’t believe that they give portfolios very much weight in the admissions process, but if she has a nice one it can’t hurt. I don’t mean to tell you how to deal with it (everyone feels comfortable with different things) but i would say that you should definitely attend the school tour. i always see parents in there seeing the place with their kids, and it’s important that you see the facilities as well. however, if there is an easy time to step out for the meeting, i would. She wants to come across as independent, and Jim should know that SHE wants to attend UC, not that you want her to (not that that is the situation here at all, just be careful with the message you send)

otherwise, enjoy your tour. hope you like UC. Cincinnati is no Chicago, but it is quite a charming little city. I like it a lot.
