<p>Just heard there is an airfare sale ending midnight on Jan 26 (probably ET) & it has some good deals available for anyone interested. We’re trying to get the kids to pin down their spring break plans so we can book & save. Will see how it goes. It’s about 1/2 the price it was last year & earlier this month for LAX to the east coast & significantly lower LAX to HNL than it was just recently.</p>

<p>most airlines seem to be participating/competing, especially for flights for Feb/Mar. not all fares are significantly cheaper, but most have dropped somewhat. unfortunately, i locked in at the higher rates 
but my fares didn’t drop THAT much. with the $150 change fee, it doesn’t make sense to bother with.</p>

<p>Everyone in my circle of friends that traditionally take mid-winter vacations are not doing them this year. Son reports many upperclassmen that flew south for springbreak last year won’t be going this year.</p>
<p>I think it is people staying home for the midwinter break as well. We see some really tempting fares on both AirTran and Southwest, I have not seen $99 fares to California in quite some time, might go out to visit my brother in Sacramento or go to Vegas for an early anniversary trip…</p>
<p>I am going to book a flight to go to see my girls in a few weeks , but I am a bit nervous of getting stuck because of all the snow they have been getting this winter.</p>
<p>Southwest quoted me $99 one way from east coast to Austin, TX. Not sure if that’s such a great deal, since we’d have to pay (separately) for 2 more legs of our trip (for a total of about $300 a ticket, total, to visit 2 states then return home). Is that $99 flight you mentioned, Rachacha, round-trip?</p>

<p>I tried to book tickets for S Spring Break from high school so we could go look at colleges in the northeast. The tickets were what we usually pay or higher. I’ll give it another try this afternoon.</p>
<p>^^pug: fares are typically highest when you are searching on the weekend.(that’s not to say you are flying on the weekend, but “searching for lowest fares” on a Sunday…I have found, especially with Continental, that flights go down on Tuesday/Wednesday…wait a couple of days…</p>
<p>I don’t know when the sale started, but Friday night I booked D2’s flight home for spring break, and got it for under $200. That’s a minimum of $100 less than usual. I believe it’s on Continental.</p>
<p>That’s an interesting tip re: seraching on Tues/Wed. Though, I think according to the OP, this sale ends Monday? I’m always intrigued by those ads “$58 one way!” etc. I guess that’s just not realistic to expect anything quite that good, though…</p>
<p>I just booked our summer trip on Spirit Airlines. The price is now 50$ less per ticket than it was two weeks ago. One caveat, They charge a lot for baggage ($15 each bag, that is $30 for the roundtrip each for bags) AND they charge for assigned seats!!! The seat assignment is free if you take what is left when you get to the airport but advanced seat reservation costs $7 for middle seat and $12 for an aisle or window seat!!! OUCH.</p>
<p>Rodney, I have found fares lower when searching mid-week as well. I think they know people have more time (generally speaking) on the weekends and aren’t going to bother waiting till mid-week. Or it could be the number crunchers have their weekly meetings on Tuesday and re-calibrate the fares that evening :)</p>
<p>I’ll check out Spirit, seiclan, thanks. Son, hub & I could get by with probably one small carry-one for the 3 of us & don’t care where we sit. So that could be a good option…! :-)</p>
<p>Whenever possible, I try to ship my kids nonstop. Two weeks ago I got a Boston to Seattle RT ticket for D for $300 on JetBlue (grrr, JetBlue). Alaska wanted $500 just for for the return flight.
H axed our plans to fly somewhere nice in the nearest future. He says people who go on vacations are usually the ones who get the boot when companies downsize. Snow keeps falling non-stop outside, and I can’t stand the Sandals commercials on CNN!</p>

<p>I don’t know about the other airlines but SW has some very nice prices - and of course free checked bags! We just booked a trip to San Diego over DS’s spring break - he’ll connect via our hub city of Chicago and we’ll all continue on together - then back home together. He’ll then have 3 full days to go to the dentist, get a haircut, and renew his driver’s license before heading back to college. All for $860. That $99 fare to the west coast is a boon.</p>
<p>I thought of cross-posting in the spring break thread - DS doesn’t really know anyone to travel with but is happy enough with us generally (we went on a cruise together last July). We’ve been to San Diego a few times before and think it should have enough variety for all of us to find something we like to do. I’ve already got quite a list of options! Wish there was a way to encourage him to take off on his own and find <young folks=“”> but he’s not really the kind of guy who’s comfortable doing that.</young></p>
<p>But between the airfare and our plan to use points to stay free at Homewood Suites, it will probably end up pretty economical - so many great free activities in that area!</p>
