Alabama ΑΦ sorority expels student for racist rant

There’s a huge difference between saying, “I can’t tell what country an Asian is from” vs “All Asians look alike”. I can’t tell what country white people are from, but all white people don’t look alike to me.

Anyway that aside, I did read something about a psychological phonemenon where people are better at distinguishing characteristics of the types of people they are most familiar with. That is, people who grew up and live amongst whites are better at distinguishing between different whites than other races. So it’s no surprise that Asians (who’ve lived in Asia) can better tell what country other Asians are from, a feat that is challenging for people who didn’t grow up in that environment.

On a slightly humorous side note, sometimes on cop shows they’ll pull people into a lineup and I’ll say to myself, “wth they all look alike to me!” I’d be such a terrible witness, because I think I suck at remembering and distinguishing similar-looking faces. Watchers of the tv show “The Good Wife” might remember that episode where the main character witnessed an African American commit a crime, but then when challenged had to confront the possibility that she had difficulty distinguishing similar-looking African Americans and might have id’d the wrong person.

For comparison, % white:

87% Marlton, NJ in 2010
60% Camden Catholic High School
54% Tuscaloosa, AL in 2010
78% University of Alabama
??% ΑΦ sorority at University of Alabama

About 10% non-white across all UA NPC sororities. Not sure how that breaks down by sorority.

Based on that recruitment video, nowhere near 10% for Alpha Phi.

The only person of color I saw in the video was the football player they essentially used as a prop.

Well prior to 2014 or 15 there was one black NPC sonority member. After that kerfuffle with the alumni stopping black girls from joining there have been more, on purpose. I note the 10% includes anyone IDing as non-white, so presumably Asian, Hispanic, etc.

I’m always anti-Greek life so take what I say with a grain of salt but I"m sure our NJ girl had spoken that way around the sorority house and had no push-back and the only reason the sorority threw her out is because she was caught.

Isn’t everyone aware that there are black fraternities and sororities? You should also be asking why you don’t see many white or Asian people in those. Is it because the historically white Greek system excludes blacks, or is it by choice, or some other reason (e.g. cost) ?

I do not believe not-black people are excluded from them.

I watched the sorority recruitment video and I’m feeling traumatized. Maybe I’m sheltered or something, but it was just creepy. Is that supposed to be some college ideal? What kind of world are we living in that young women would be attracted to that?!!

I was thinking, oh to be young again.

That sorority video is soft porn. Watch it with the sound turned off.

Actually, many of the historically white sororities at the University of Alabama did exclude black people until recently:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/1552777-sorority-racism-article-crimson-white-p1.html

However, racial (self-)segregation in sororities and fraternities is widespread, and not just in Alabama or the south, if chapter photos paint a picture of such.

@TooOld4School, I’m not wild about that either. I wouldn’t send my daughter to an all-white or all-black school so why would I encourage her to join a sorority where everyone looks like her? I want my child to mingle with kids from diverse backgrounds and with diverse life experiences.

The reason we’re picking on Alpha Phi at the moment is that it’s the sorority the potty-mouthed girl was a member of.

Thinking of the sororities at my school, I doubt the Alpha Phi girls were truly disgusted at the statement. It probably got a reaction like “OMG YOU CANT SAY THAT HAHAHA” and then once the public got involved… imagine the sorority said “Hey we know what she said was terrible and we don’t condone her actions but we know her and you don’t and we think she’s a good person that made a mistake and is truly sorry so we’re keeping her in our sorority”. I can only imagine the “#boycottaphi #boycottallsororities theyre all racist #boycottNPC”. No room for disagreement. Once you’re publicly shamed your life is over and everyone that associates with you is racist and supports racism.

Or, in this case, publicly shamed yourself.

She didn’t do the shaming, the public did. She just did the action people found offensive.

I’m glad to at least hear her sober reaction today.

Here is the chapter’s web site photo gallery, in case anyone wants to try to use it to try to make more current observations: http://alabamaalphaphi.org/gallery/

i just watched that recruitment video. Gawds, I shouldn’t have done that.

And someone way upstream mentioned that sororities are great because you make friends that last a long time and she had stayed in touch with people for 30 years…I too have stayed in touch with dear college friends for 30 years and none of us joined a sorority.
