Wow! You guys are a wealth of information -this is absolutely fantastic!!

She has opted out of the mealplan, but we will get the Terp Bucks for lunches etc.

As we are flying in, we cant bring alot of stuff , but will definitely hit Costco when we hit town. Craigslist is also a great suggestion. My daughter has met her roommate over facebook - and they have been talking about who is bringing what. The one item I will have to get is a waffle iron, as my daughter loves to cook waffles. And I have a feeling that she will be bringing her Wii.

Is there a Target or WalMart near by? I understand IKEA is fairly close.

Thanks again for all your information - i am making lists from all your suggestions.

I had to chuckle at that. All my son wants is 3 pots/pans. I to boil mac and cheese in, 1 to make grill cheese, and 1 to cook any kind of frozen food (chicken strips) or the leftover uneaten brownie batter! If I sent hwith a waffle iron, one of 2 things would happen.
- He would sneak back in the car.
- He would think it is some new fangled machine to make grilled cheese. He would then call me and tell me the grill cheese maker doesn’t work well!

Now my DD sh’e be like yours, but it will be an electric skillet since she loves to make pancakes.

The only thing I would tell you to get back and there and bring with you is the mattress topper, because they might be out of them since it is an item people tend to forget. Make sure you get in XL

I guess she moves in on Friday then, which makes me happy since I assumed that this dorm was going to be filled with mostly returning students and so it would be jammed on Sat. No offense to you, it’s just parking is insane and I don’t want to relive centreville again…ARGGH! BTW what is with UMD having a move in day on the same day as the 1st home game. Like the traffic and parking there wasn’t going to kill us, they now have to add more!

Yes we have a mattress topper and XL sheets. We bought those “space bags” to pack them in - those things where you put the clothes/bedding in and then with a vacuum you suck out the air.

I wish we could stay for the football game, but we have to fly home - are the students able to buy tickets when they arrive on campus? We arrive early for International Orientation, so are tickets available then?

The students can buy on line. I know DS moved in last yr on Thurs and went to the game on Sat. Where are you coming from?

Ok - will have my daughter look into it.

We are comming from Vancouver, Canada

SO I talked to DS today about his room assignment, yadda yaadda yadda, and he tells me he is scheduled to move in on Sunday! ARRGGHH! I thought everybody was going in on Saturday. PLEASE TELL ME HE IS WRONG!

Our intention was he would go up with his car on saturday, filled with whatever he could fill it with, we would bring the Suburban on SUnday and do the rest. Avoid the traffic/congestion and be merrily on our way driving back his car! Now I am back with moving in with thousands of others! No insult, but that s*cks!

Please tell me DS is wrong and the move in date for returning is actually Sat. I can’t find it anywhere on the darn site!

He also said that his room assignment from his personal email account for UMD has him in a different room than the one on line check in, the only thing he can figure is the one on line means the building, and his personal email means the actual room number. He is also hoping new terp is right that the assignments have all gone out, because there was a chance that his 4 bdrm 6 roommate could have turned into 8, which would mean 2 strangers.

I sure thought that I saw a chart with all the different move-in dates, but I can’t find it on the umd site either??? Returning Terp D is in a living-learning community, so I can’t confirm the regular dates, either.

DS is in scholars and elected to leave Cambridge, now you put a new CRAP, OMG thought on my list and my mind…did he check to see if he is to move in earlier due to scholars, since usually they have mixers for them. I know Scholars move in with gemstone and honors, but he is not in the scholars dorm, and I thought all returning student move in the same day…love the kid, but would like to move him in before the traffic.

He did make me giggle today, the BBB mag/circular came and he came up to me and said I want this for my dorm linens, is that okay? I said of course, especially since ly he couldn’t care less.

BTW it was a great buy. (front cover)
$79 bucks, and included:
Comforter
Sheets
Pillow case
Sham
Fleece blanket
Laundry hamper
Dry erase board

Plus they have a $5 coupon, so it is 74 bucks. I am going to do it online since the postage charge is close to the gas I will pay (I have a suburban) and it will come in the box ready to go. Of course I will open to make sure, but that box has to be easier to carry than the bags!

ASTRO you know if you have to wait and hang for the different dates between the DDs my home is open as a landing zone. It takes 50-60 minutes to get there from us. I am sure you will elect to stay there, but maybe we can hook up for dinner.

Hey…as long as he shows up for his first class on Monday, he’ll be fine!!!

Yeeeaaaahhhh, but I’ll be battling 66 Traffic on a Sunday night during Labor day weekend! I Love the kid, but you know I have to draw the line somewhere
Am I allowed to do a shoulder roll for him out of the car?

BTW I updated the homecoming thread, it is announced 11:59 kickoff, and I checked tickets there are 20 seats available left side of the student (UVA 10 yrd line) or right of students but field goal, post your vote

Astro & Pima - will either of you be there on Thursday or Friday (27th or 28th?) DH and I will be there Wed - Saturday afternoon and I would love to meet you both. Sounds like you are up in the air as to move-in dates, but keep me posted.

DD is on a flight as we speak from Athens - Heathrow - LAX. She will be home tomorrow about 4 pm, then we are on a flight to UMD (red-eye…yuck) on Wednesday at 10 pm. She is going to be exhausted. I will be at the Marriott for 2 nights…plans are that she will stay the 2nd night with me, but who knows, right?!

My guess is she will ditch you to hang with her new BFFS.

It looks like our move in is the 30th, but Bullet amd I have no problem meeting up with all of you after you move your kids in for dinner. We can even go to Ratzies (not!). FYI if you ever want to splurge on your kid to let them know you are thinking about them, just call them and say stay in your room in 30 minutes I will have a gift delivered to you that you can share with your friends. Prior to the call, call Ratzies and order wings and soda, they are on the web. I always did it on a Saturday afternoon for away games b/c I knew he was watching in he lounge with his friends

We’ll probably do the Beverly-Hillbilly drive from NC to UMD on Tuesday night (except Grannie won’t be on top of the truck in her rocking chair—it may be a rolled-up carpet!!!), and will probably stay until Friday or Saturday. D1 moves in Aug 26, D2 moves in Aug 27. I figure by the afternoon/evening of Aug 27, we’ll all be too snipey at each other and will need a break! I’d be up for dinner on the 27th or lunch on the 28th, or some variation otherwise.

BTW, pima, I made the same calendar assumption, but Labor Day is Sept 7 this year, so move in weekend is the weekend earlier. Monday, Aug 31 is the first day of classes…then the following weekend is Labor Day. Thanking the DC traffic gods for that bit of scheduling.

God I would not even want to imagine that drive astro. The only way it would be doable is if you left at 0-dark thirty to beat the traffic. Even so you still might hit alot since it will be the last “beach week” of the yr!

astro - are you renting a moving van or what??? That’s a lot of stuff to bring for 2 kidlets. I’m picturing that Beverly Hillbilly drive… ;)

Just wondering…
Is there a Target or Walmart fairly close to the campus?

We are flying into BWI and then renting a car, so we will have transportation.

The closest Target is at Prince George’s plaza, which is close to campus (for future needs, there’s a campus bus that goes there). Not in the greatest of areas, but it has everything you’d expect from a Target(except by the end of the weekend all the dorm-kind of stuff will be slim-pickins). I’m sure there’s a Walmart somewhere, but I haven’t come across it.

There’s a Home Depot just off rt. 1 north of campus. (they have refrigerators, rugs, storage things, etc. that you may not think about coming from Home Depot). Also, IKEA is also a good source of all kinds of “stuff”.

Luckily, D1 is also going to be coming home to visit in August (and off to Mexico with us). She’ll drive her (little) car—probably 2/3 of her stuff is up there already (she lived up there over the summer), and the rest of her stuff will fit in her car (even if her sister drives up with her). We’ve got a mini-van that I expect will be packed to the gills. The only flaw in my spectacular planning is that it looks like hubby won’t be able to go up with me. He’ll probably fly up and we’ll drive home together leisurely over the weekend, but I’m thinking D1 will need to recruit some brawny friends to help us move in. D1 is tall and strong, but as far as moving things, I’m pretty worthless. Of course, I could look for a Jed Clampett truck that would really make the move perfect. (ha, or we threatened two years ago to move D1 in with the RV!!! she, on the other hand, was not amused.)

Thank you astro - I wouldnt have thought of Home Depot. I guess there is some benefit to having to arrive early - we may get to Target etc prior to the rest of the freshman masses!

By the way, if you find the Jed Clampett truck - I want to see pictures!!
