All Dorms Information

I remember ly when DS’s friend, a girl was leaving and her Dad’s pick up truck was filled to the gills. He came home laughing about how much she was taking, and said it’s because she was a girl. I smiled and said did you look in our dining room lately (where we were stockpiling his crap)? He said yeah, but I have nowhere near her amt. I laughed and said okay you go with that! 2 days later as we packed our Denali (GMC Suburban equivalent), DS was shocked, because we couldn’t even see out the back window and that was with all of the seats down, or in essence a pick up truck bed! I asked him so are you a girl too? He didn’t find that funny!

Of course guys take more bulkier things like Xboxes and surround sound stereo systems! Girls it’s all about the clothes, throw pillows and posters! SO much easier to carry 4 big pillows and the folding butterfly chair than the stereo, wires and 5 speakers!

ASTRO I will be looking for the Jed Clampett truck on 495 on Sunday! This yr with DS is new leonardtown, be on the look out for a Denali with a tow hitch trailer and rooftop carrier :D

We drove our s to campus in an Acura RL. He sat in the back with his guitar and a laundry basket full of clothes. We also had the trunk stuffed. That was it…

Mind you, we live 30 mins. from campus and decided it would be easier to bring more stuff as needed.

Hi Gang…I’ve been out of the net for a few days…DS had orientation Monday and Tuesday.

Just a comment about the cooking, for students in regular dorms, there are restrictions. From the residential life web page:

No Cooking Policy:

For fire safety and sanitation/health reasons, cooking is prohibited in all student rooms. This is why students in the residence halls are required to participate on an approved meal plan.

The only permissible appliances are popcorn poppers and hot water pots that have enclosed heating elements and bear the UL seal. These items should never be used in student rooms, only in a designated cooking area within a floor lounge.

Students may not bring or use microwaves, microfridges, electric skillets, crockpots, or appliances with open or exposed heating elements or coils such as hotplates, toasters, and toaster ovens.

Small refrigerators are permitted in student rooms. They must meet these safety specifications:

3.6 cubic foot maximum

1.5 amp maximum in high-rise halls where most freshmen will live (0.5 amp maximum in unrenovated South Campus halls)

120 volts, 60 cycle AC

Grounding type, 3-prong electric plug and 3-wire cord

Underwriters Laboratory (UL) Seal of Approval

Thank you everyone for his/her imput.
I hope this thread helps!

where can i buy a good, moderately priced mini fridge?

Shayman,

Try Best Buy, Home Depot, Target, Walmart.

Are blenders okay for the dorm room then?

You might want to try Ebay or Craigs List for a fridge also. And if you are a BJ’s member, we saw them for $99 at BJ’s yesterday.

IF you have a PC Richards near you, they were good for refrigerators. Hardly ever buy anything there but they have some good deals.

Jewel—technically, I don’t think so…but, unless your son sets up a side business selling frozen marguaritas to his dorm friends, I doubt if he’d have any problem. It’s the microwaves that they are adamant about.

Astrophysicsmom,

He’s not a margarita man…lol! He drinks protein shakes in the morning and he blends them with different ingredients and ice every morning and sometimes before bed. He has asked me to find him a small blender for his room. I was just checking. I know it rattles my teeth when he puts the ice in, so I’m sure his roommate may not be thrilled…

Well he can always make them in the common room, there is one for every floor with sink, fridge, microwave, power outlet.

I don’t remember blenders being anywhere on the prohibited items list…

There is an easy way to get around this…black and decker makes a battery operated blender, It is strong enough to make margaritas…virgin ones of course ;)… It is full size, or just a bit smaller. The best part is no glass, the blender itself is plastic.

I didn’t know about the Black & Decker battery operated blender. I will Google it. Thanks!

Does anyone have a few “good” things to say about Easton (i.e. more targeted to parents). We know a family who’s son will be there, and most of what I remember hearing about Easton would certainly appeal to a incoming freshman guy who’s looking forward to partying. Can anyone say “it’s not THAT bad”!!!

I actually heard from a number of North Campus RAs that Easton has improved DRAMATICALLY over the past year. Apparently the RAs there are running programs really well and that it’s working on keeping the students involved in a good way. Elkton had more write-ups last year (many of them on my brother’s floor…::sigh::).

Well that makes sense since the custodian staff went on strike at EASTON for 07-08 because the disgusting state of the bathrooms. The RA’s surely did not want to relive that again in 08-09. EASTON is known as the party dorm and has been for eons. The fact and the reality is every dorm will have partiers, even Denton with Gemstone. The son will have to learn that there is a time and place for everything it is all a part of growing up! I would agree that because of the strike Easton is probably bett than other dorms.

In the end these dorms are the classical thought of what college dorms are like…elevators that are small and slow, community bathrooms, washing machines that don’t work properly, cinderbrick walls, lineoleum floors, bathrooms that you take showers while wearing pool shoes, and kids loving it because nobody is complaining that the room smells like dirty socks mixed with the leftover pizza from last night :p

What have you guys heard of cambridge?

i was put there, but im not in scholars or anything.

DS is someone that may or may not have a straggler…he is new leonardtown 4 bdrms they started with 6, but now it says 7 “vacant”.

I have to agree, it really no big deal…all you need to figure out is who is bringing the fridge and who is bringing the tv. Maybe you will decide to get a carpet…whoopdeedo! Astro’s DD made that decision back in June. You are not going to color coordinate sheets, linens and curtains. You are all just excited to know who your roommate is and that is it. I get it, but I am betting you also have already done your major shopping, not to be mean what exactly does it matter when you live in a 10 x 12 dorm, are you going to color coordinate the bed linen?

I do get it because I believe newterp’s child is going to leonardtown, that is apt living, they need to talk to the roommates. However, I will say DS and his roommates have yet to discuss who is bringing the microwave, pots, pans, dishes, glasses, etc and they are all returning sophs. They are not on a meal plan so those items really mean alot.

I know I sound incredibly harsh, but it seems to me that there is a lot of pinging going on in the wrong direction. Freshman should be determining if they want lofts, the meal plan, and how they are going to tackle move in day. Imagine 300+ kids with their parents and their crap on a rainy day in a 4 HR window (the top floors move in at a different time then the bottom) trying to get a parking spot in front of the dorm and there are only 50 of them. You can buy a fridge on Wed, move in on Thurs. You really can’t begin to fathom what it is like waiting 45 minutes in line as it fills up with only 2 people, their family and the rented cart, which if you arrive 1 hr after the doors open you will wait 2 hrs to get a cart.

You can find out your roommate today and contact them via AOL, AIM, Facebook or text, it is not going to make the hill of beans in difference since they are your roommate. 15 days, 21 days, 3 mos, in prior notice they are still your roommate.

Also if you are worried about fridges, go buy one, don’t open it, keep the receipt and return it, if it is a duplicate.

MY TIP: BE THERE AT 8 AM OR DOORS OPEN OR COME RIGHT BEFORE CLOSING, if you are assigned afternoon be there at the start time or end time. Also who cares if you have the bed by the window! The furniture, beds, closets are identical, so you don’t need to claim anything

Things to talk about, who is bringing the swifters(wet and dry), garbage can, and that BOTH of you bring fans.

For yourself here is my reminder list:

 1. Jar full of coins…especially quarters for laundry
 2. 12 packs of sodas, they fit under the bed
 3. Crap food…microwave popcorn, pop tarts, etc… they will argue but they will be thankful a few weeks later

MOST IMPORTANTLY WALK AWAY…I saw that very quickly while unpacking, they could not wait to say goodbye. We raised them for this day, now relish how good of a job you did by seeing how happy they are to spread their wings

DS is in Easton and the interesting thing is that Fall Move-In Schedule shows new residents on even-numbered floors moving in on Thursday and new residents on odd-numbered floors moving in on Friday both days being 0800-1400, with returning residents moving in Friday at 4 p.m. I thought Thursday was all the special programs but DS is on an even numbered floor and not in a special program so I guess that all changed. Should make it a lot easier on the move-in traffic though, lol. Schedule is available as a link from the assignment page or you can go to: [Residence Hall Check-In Dates and Times: August 2009](http://www.resnet.umd.edu/rhcheckin/).
