All UVa frats on suspension

We all know the statistics are problematic, but at least one study showed that 45% of the female victims of sexual assault on campus had not been drinking. What about them? They get lost in this “it’s all drunken regret sex” view of sexual assault. Abbey, A (2002). “Alcohol-related sexual assault: A common problem among college students”. Journal of Studies on Alcohol 63 (2): 118–128. PMID 12022717.

The latest Duke rape accusation comes from a woman who says she was given drugged hot chocolate. When we say the problem is drinking, I assume we don’t mean “drinking delicious non-alcoholic chocolatey drinks.”

@Consolation - thanks for the McLeod complaint. Ho, ho, ho Duke was naughty about following their own processes and procedures. If Duke really did this they deserve to write a very large check, give the kid his diploma and get some administrative training on how to follow their own policies and procedures. Bet they settle out of court. and give him his diploma.

my3girls, I don’t think kids get “lost” in all the stories. IF and that’s a big if, the colleges follow their own processes and procedures, work collaboratively with the police to distinguish criminal behavior from relationship issues, grant both the accuser and the accused commonly held civil liberties which apply both to public and private colleges and universities, do not rush to judgement without either the force of the criminal system or without evidence, and apply reasonable punishment that fits the misconduct, I do believe everyone will be safer and there won’t be so much static. No one here disbelieves that rape occurs and most of us believe there are plenty of cases that aren’t criminal rape and plenty of colleges are operating everyday without sensational breaches of justice or civil lawsuits by accusers and accused. It’s just a few colleges that have been spectacularly weak at managing these sorts of things and it makes it very easy to point out the errors.

The latest? There’s another one?

One thing that continues to amaze me is how steep the learning curve seems to be on these behaviors. At what point is it going to penetrate the consciousness of adolescents (and those apparently permanently suspended in a state of adolescence) that it is very, very stupid to take pictures of your friends digitally or otherwise penetrating or molesting incapacitated young women? And even dumber to pass these photos around to others?

Given that they cannot master the simple truth that providing the means for self-incrimination is dumb, and in fact a crime in itself if you distribute photos, perhaps it is not surprising that they cannot seem to comprehend that molesting people in such a manner is a crime, not something to have a chuckle over.

True, I can’t believe every kid on the planet hasn’t gotten that message. I somewhat have to agree on the ‘suspended state of adolescence’…it’s hard not to read some of these stories and not come to that conclusion.Makes me wonder what they were doing during their late teen years - I know with my 3 boys there were tons and tons and tons of teachable moments post age 16 until they left for college age 18-19. It was the toughest 3 years of my life (and my H’s life I’m sure as he had plenty of time to reflect on his youth) as we navigated everything - turned my hair gray and I’m sure took years off my life-span. The only thing that saved me sometimes were momofwildchild’s posts.

Yes Cardinal, was there ANOTHER Duke case?

People who take pictures of themselves and their friends committing crimes, and pass around those pictures, obviously think they are doing nothing wrong. In these rapists’ vile circles, raping unconscious women seemingly is a thing people do. i’m hoping these guys will learn that normal people think their behavior is despicable and disgusting, or at least that normal people think that raping or molesting unconscious people is not a thing that normal people do.

My3girls…you make a very good point.

The latest on the Duke ADPhi case. The girl apparently had one drink, and the date rape drug was in hot chocolate. Thank goodness she went to police early.

In this latest Duke case, earlier this month, the victim woke up in the morning remembering nothing after she was given some hot chocolate the night before at a frat party. She was bruised and her clothes were torn. She immediately went to the hospital, where the police were called. The incident is being investigated by police.

Oh good, glad she went to the police. Maybe the message is getting out.

How many creeps are there? Was student #2 a creep? Or did he just know the Kid was a creep? And how did student # 2 know the KiD was a creep?

One thing I love about the new technology is when you receive a text on your phone, you can receive that text on other devices. So even if a criminal breaks your phone, there may be a trail.

Do these date rape drugs work like the anesthesia you get for a colonoscopy, where you’re awake-ish during the procedure, but afterwards you fall asleep and don’t remember anything?

I think most people do lose consciousness.

So…a person is laughing and having a great time…and she is sober. She is slipped one of these rape drugs.

After about 15 minutes…she is in trouble. So, I am not that interested in witnesses who saw the woman having a good time an hour before.

One of the stories that Alh posted was about a young woman who was roofed. She lost control of her bodily functions in a public place…at the top of some stairs…

There are several different date rape drugs, too. The women at Brown were given a different drug, GHB.

Yes…

Obviously that has to be taken into account when evaluating witness accounts, particularly if drugging is suspected. But if you are making a reference to the other Duke case, it does not apply. Check the timeline.

I am talking in general…

There’s no drunk driving lobby, and there never has been. But there are many people, including many parents on theis board, who would vehemently oppose a drinking ban in college. Heck, I didn’t drink in college, I drink not much now, I think there is far too much drinking in college, and I think expelling students for a first-time drinking offense is an absolutely terrible and completely unworkable idea that is going nowhere.

I’d like to hear some good ideas about limiting alcohol use in colleges, and moving away from the in my view pernicious idea that getting plastered every weekend is a good thing for college students to do. I’d like to hear some good ideas. A total ban is not one of them.
