Alumni of non-football schools: Do you feel left out on fall Saturdays?

It’s getting close to kicking off the college football season. Some folks, including me, are getting itchy to slap some hits on anything moving!

Who said it didn’t? Who here ever questioned that many people enjoy following college sports, either personally or in the context of business? No one.

I don’t care for opera, as I said upthread!

Men aren’t dominant in my particular field. My company is one of the top 500 women owned businesses in the country and top 100 in my state. Deals in my business aren’t closed on the golf course at all. Frankly, in my business, it’s one that’s generally very resistant to wining and dining, of any sort. (Which is good - I’d rather just award people business during business hours and be with my family on nights / weekends.) I recognize that what you are describing certainly exists, but I think it’s particular to specific regions, specific industries, specific companies and specific people, not a universal “this is how business gets done.”

Hi…My name is Dogwood, I’m a woman and I missed a family wedding to go to a college football game. I hang my head in shame!!! Just know that I had planned this trip (a reunion with many college friends) and paid a lot of money up front and my wonderful nephew decided to get married in a rush. I did send a nice check - and my team won!

My son went to USC. First year he was there we went to the USC-Stanford game at the Coliseum during Parents Weekend. Followed the band over from campus along with 1000s of other people. What a sight. He made us leave at halftime and as far as I know never went to another USC game. While I feel that I missed out on something during the next three seasons, he didn’t. We did go to any number of interesting lectures and plays on campus, but alas no more football games.

My wedding was delayed slightly because the Mavericks were in the playoffs, and I didn’t want to walk down the aisle without knowing the score. We had a TV in both dressing rooms. They lost. Dh and I were like, “Ugh, did you see that?” And then we were happily married. :)

I have never been to the Army-Navy game (on my bucket list). I have a feeling you have goosebumps the entire game. That must be such an experience.

I’m getting worked up on football now! Many a weekend I’ve attended a high school game Friday night, college game Sat., and pro game on Sunday.

PG, your posts are a cry for help. Here you are:

Donna, I’m familiar with the East Coast (graduated high school and college in Mass., and half my friends in college were from the Tri-state area…brother lived in NJ, etc.). But you’ve got the cause and effect wrong re college football in NYC. They LOVE college football there, they just don’t have any decent teams with which to form a meaningful relationship. For decades, Notre Dame played games in the area to sellout crowds.

LOL, I was emailing some friends this morning so we could figure out who was going to buy tickets for the game for our 25th reunion weekend this fall so we could all sit together. I don’t even know who they are playing.

Just looked it up. Penn State. There you have it.

Schmaltz: I dated a football player for several years and dutifully went to all the games. He explained it all to me. I’m still not interested. That’s fine. Other people are. That’s fine too. Different strokes for different folks. Just don’t tell me I’m “missing out.”

I’ve never thought of NYC as not into college football. But not sure how to prove or disprove that. Maybe college football in NYC gets relatively less media attention with two popular pro football teams; two pro baseball teams (with some frequency) playing well into October and pro hoops starting in October (not this year).

In any case, a NU alum was successful in organizing a very cool “Sailgate” from Manhattan up to West Point for this September’s Northwestern-Army football game. It was originally going to be just one boat with about 150 alums but the demand was so great that they’ve now filled up 4 boats. And President Schapiro’s office is also organizing a boat from NYC to West Point. Check out the great “LakethePosts” blog for details.

You’re missing out.

My college conducts football clinics just for ladies so they can hone their football knowledge and understanding of the game.

Nope never. I spent much of my childhood watching football on TV with my Dad, but it wouldn’t bother me if I never saw another game.

Pizzagirl, Penn State - NU could be a great game  If you pay any attention to the game (at a 25th reunion I can certainly understand being more interested in catching up with classmates instead): pay attention to the NU quarterback, #7, Dan Persa. He’s a lot of fun to watch. I won’t be at that game, but will be there for Parents Weekend.

I know just the woman to serve as Honorary Commodoress of the Fleet.

Who, Schmaltz - me? Let it go.

I have recently come to discover that a very important student currency has been eliminated around here. The student tickets for our flagship U and Tech school’s games (very hot commodities) are no longer paper tickets. They load them onto their student ID? How will they scalp them or give them to their friends? This is a tragedy.

And Schapiro went from Williams to NWern? Didnt realize that.

I drink vinegar for breakfast. It’s good for you.
