Am I competitive? UF, FSU, UCF, USF

I’ll keep this as short and sweet as possible. Just looking for a community opinion on my competitiveness to get into mainly UF but also FSU, UCF and USF. Here’s a quick overview:

3.4 Cumulative GPA, 4.0 for this year (I started off high school roughly, had to overcome major illness).

By the end of high school I’ll have taken

  • 5 AP classes
  • 4 honors courses
  • 2 yrs foreign language
  • academic electives like sociology, philosophy, law studies, and some more

I’ve worked:

  • 2 part time restaurant jobs (still at one)
  • 1 paid internship with a local psychiatrist
  • Volunteered making toys for childhood cancer patients
  • Volunteered at hospice charity fundraiser
  • Volunteered with my schools buddy program to help new kids get used to our campus
  • 24 ACT
  • 1160 SAT (new sat out of 1600) I plan to at least one of those again

Other:

  • Played varsity football
  • Ran track
  • Played in the band
  • Won superior and excellent medals for snare drum solos at solo and ensemble festival
  • Speak, read, and write English and Spanish fluently
  • Took guitar lessons and taught them
  • launched two successful sporting goods businesses and sold products online
  • brown belt in taekwando (this is funnier than it is helpful I know)
  • written for the school paper four years all four years
  • In Spanish club

I’m just worried about the fact that my GPA is so low and that I’ve actually failed three classes and retaken them online.

What do you think? Does my EC make up for my failed classes, test scores or GPA? I really want to go to UF but people tell me they won’t be able to look pass the low GPA. Thanks so much in advance.

Usually people who feel their GPA is low compensate it with a good SAT/ACT score. But answering your question I think your extra credit won’t make up for it…more like it won’t cover it up. However what I would do is invest in community service hours try to achieve at least 200-500

Review the Florida SUS Admissions tour Matrix. It has a lot of useful admissions info on the 12 Florida public universities. It includes the (50%) middle range for accepted students GPA’s, SAT and ACT scores. You can see where you fall in that range.

Note that the GPA’s are weighted, and that it’s usually a bit easier to be accepted to the Summer term vs the Fall term.

Good Luck!

EDIT: note that the SAT scores are based on the old SAT and not the new SAT. You can use the Concordance tables, to determine how your new SAT score maps to the old SAT. (also how your ACT compares to your SAT score)
