SAT Prep Course

If I do well my senior year, and bring up my SAT’s a little bit do I have a chance at ANY Ivy’s? I want to major in Chemical Engineering or Nuclear Engineering

1) where is your french3 junior yr? going from french 2 soph to ap french senior is gonna be VERY VERY hard unless you’re a native/heritage speaker
2) a 1000 SAT (M+V) is below even our national average… what happened? from what ive learned at CC, anything 1400+(m+v) would put someone in the “maybe, hope your recs were good” pile… i def recommened boosting your SAT scores, and more than “a little bit”… that prep course is a good idea…

No, you are not.

I will be honest with you- don’t get your hopes up. Do not count on URM status to get you in because there are more qualified URMs that will be rejected. Take out the honor societies, which don’t do much at most high schools, and you’re left with music. This could be be a strong ec if you significantly stressed it in your application, perhaps in your essays. It’s good that you’re taking AP’s, but it definitely doesn’t look good that you got C’s in them.

My suggestions:

 1. Boost that SAT up. A lot.
 2. Get excellent grades senior year.
 3. Get excellent recommendations.
 4. Write excellent essays.
 5. Aim lower. You can apply to an Ivy if you want, but you’d have a much better chance at colleges a notch or two lower.
 6. Check out N.C. State, Georgia Tech, U Florida, etc. They have better chemical engineering programs than most of the Ivies.

hmmm, your SAT scores are far too low…

but yeah, go ahead and apply anyway, you may surprise yourself and all of us.

:rereads: how can you go from a C in precal to ap calc ab? thats coo-coo! you’ll die! at our school if you’re getting a B/C (c in 1 sem and b in the other, or lower) Calculus Honors is HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended… (that, or just end math… which a lot of peeps do… but heh)

and kemet, as an officer in two honor societies (NHS & SHS)… we do tons!!! we’re always running around doing community service projects and having socials… lol

Definitely bring that out in your application, then. I didn’t intend to insult you, but NHS is an empty honor at many high schools; make sure that sticks out.

Yeah…decided to edit my post. I’m not really on a basis to judge. lol. In short - I don’t think you have any chance at an ivy league.

no your not, try community college and get into some nice universities

Oboes, stay focused man. You have an AP schedule fit for a genius, so work on getting As instead of Cs. Cs don’t really say anything. As say everything.

“no your not, try community college and get into some nice universities”

Exactly. :)

uh, i am far more capable than community colleges, but thanks anyway

omg, youre from fl? what county? rep fla!!! <~~~~ pbc

Indeed you could be, but you don’t look very good on paper, and the colleges won’t get to know you, all you’ll be is a little file folder with a 1510/2400 SAT score and a GPA of about 3.3. Even if you bring your SAT score up by 200 points, you’re still looking at a CC. I think you might want to look into community college, suck it up for 2 years, and you could definitely transfer to a different school after that…

Oboe,

Your scores are well below the 25th percentile at most of the Ivy League schools, so it doesn’t look probable that you’ll get in. Why do you want to go to the Ivies, anyway?

Nash

what!!! a community college… what the hell is that. there are numerous colleges that would except a 3.3. a 3.3 is not a bad GPA… my sister got like a 2.2 and went to a school that is NOT a community college…

Exactly. Only about 25-30 colleges in the entire US admit less than 25% of their applicants. About 120-150 admit less than 50%. That means at about 2500 colleges your chances of being admitted are better than your chances of being rejected.

BTW, Jonathan K is supposedly in 7th grade, so take his opinion for what it’s worth…

Yeah, you are definitely qualified for a university, there’s very little question about that. You’d only have to go to a community college if that was your choice. Take a look at [this guy’s profile](http://www.tumr.com/view/?id=47&app=college) and you can see that you can get into solid state schools with low scores. And remember that 500’s on each section of the SAT are average - so anyone who says that the OP isn’t smart enough for university is delusional.

and jus so u guys know my GPA is a 4.0 Cumulative weighted. lol

oboesmrtguy40,

after some research…
1)what county in Florida are you in? (will explain weighting system/grade inflation)
2) when did you take this SAT score?
3) how do you get a 2 on fcat yet be allowed to take AP anything? im in palm beach county, and one is not even allowed to be in HONORS with a level 2 (unless a waiver is asked, but it looks really really bad to see “English II Honors” and “Intensive Reading” on a schedule, as reading below grade level while being in an honors/ap class is inexplicable)
4) just a quote: “Um, for IVY League you are gonna have to really kick butt on your SAT and ACT and SAT II’s, because there are freshmen at other high schools that are in AP and honors. And your schedule is not rigorous at all. I know it isnt your fault tha your school doesnt offr many advanced classes at your grade, but you have to understand that you are competing against other high school students who took AP as early as 9h grade. IVY League schools only accept like 15% of the applicants.”

… so up up up that SAT score… i mean, the SAT is like IT… a 1000 (M+V) is not impressive unless its a Comm College… there should be some correlation between your GPA/HPA/class rank and your SAT score, if not, colleges will just think your school is cursed with grade inflation…

CC is really really depressing… i may be #5/600something and the “smart” kid for my class, but even my 1290(MV) falls short from the glory of being impressive… we are being compared to brightest of this country and getting Cs (and more than 1, which is understandable) is not ivy-league material… so as a fellow Floridian, consider raising your SAT score via prep classes/that blue book thingy/idk and milk our Bright Futures scholarship thingy and settle for an instate school… maybe if you your raised 200+ plus on math n verbal (which is doable, you still have time) you might wanna apply to UF, which is a really good school

ps. good luck on your ap exams this year (i read about your 1 in micro…)

sigh… CC=depression
