This upcoming semester I’m scheduled to take,
IDH 3600 Honors Ethics (3)
AMH 2010 American History I (3)
ENC 1102 Composition II (3)
SPN 1120 Spanish I w/ lab (5)
I’m worried that starting in the honors program is going to eat up a lot of my time, the class hasn’t even started yet and we have assigned readings to do but I also feel like 14 credits isn’t enough and I could take Western Civilization I also. Will these classes equal a full load. I did take 5 years of Spanish in high school.

I don’t see the point in taking Western Civilization; It is just a random GE course.
I’d also tell you to just test out of spanish 1 and get into the class you deserve.

Basically Quality over Quantity.

How many credits did you take last semester? Do you have a scholarship that requires you to take a certain number of credit hours per year/semester? If you need to drop a class, will you still be able to maintain full-time student status?

If you feel like you need to add more to your schedule, I’d suggest adding an elective or similar class if possible.

Well I’m a history major so I need to get through the lower requirements (American, Western Civ.) before I can start taking 3000 level classes. And if I do add Western Civilization it will bring my credit hours up to 17 in addition to the honors class. How difficult is college level Spanish, I never took AP.

Is it the equivalent of Spanish 101? If so, you’ll be fine. In 101 they learn things like “hola” and the present tense. I study French and the first year sequence was pretty easy. It picks up second year, though, since they expect you to have an intermediate grasp and to be able to speak and utilize all you’ve learned.

Can you take a placement test? See where it puts you, and maybe go a semester below. A lot of my friends tested in 4th semester French but went in 3rd semester instead, and it was honestly the best choice for them. They were able to adapt to college without being in over their heads.

And in general, do what will keep you on track. If taking Western civ gives you more leg room with your major, do it. If it doesn’t really change anything, then only take it if you want to.
