i took my SATs and got 1710. is that a ridiculous score to even apply to harvard?

It’s definitely on the lower end of SAT scores for ivies. But why would you be wasting your time just because of one score? Admissions are NOT based solely on scores/grades.

The only way you would be wasting your time and get a 0% chance of admission… is not applying.

Glad I got to you first before you get torn to shreds by CC ;P

let the flames ensue

hahaha thanks mal77.
i would’ve taken criticism well but words of encouragement are always good lol thanks.

anyone else?

Let me take one more stab.

Don’t stop believing, dontstopbelievin.

Hallmark card please.

hahahah thats the second time i got a comment about my CC name…
i guess i should stick by my name…
are you a student at harvard mal77?

You should critically evaluate your entire package (scores, gpa, e.c’s etc etc) and decide if the package is competitive for the superselective colleges. If the answer is yes, then apply. If not, look elsewhere.

gpa is pretty good i’d say… between high 96 and low to mid 97
i’m pretty sure i have enough ec’s as well.
&& honors/awards.
rank within 8~10%

I hope to be. Heh. Although my first choice would by far be Yale.

well, if you’re a junior you could always retake…big improvements are rare but not impossible.

ohh mkay.

& goodluck mal77.

well, if ur rank is less than top 5% and ur sat is 1710, then YES, u are wasting ur time, unless u got a hook or are a URM…if not, then don’t waste ur time, unless u want to.

OMG people stop putting down URMs as if they are totally dumb or something ! I know for a fact that its not that easy for URMs to get in and the ones that do are killer smart and leave with the same GPAs as other students. My sis is a URM and ultra international (African born in America who lived in Asia) AND her dad worked in the admissions office at Harvard AND was a teaching fellow AND she had a 4.0 1410 sat (old sat) AND was a brill writer AND she did not get in. So its not like oh you are a URM, you have a pulse ? WELCOME TO HARVARD ! We actually have to work you know ! Stop treating us like crap. Some of us suffered greatly growing up in broken homes etc. We don’t have the benefits of legacy and all of these connections. Black legacies are almost non-existent. We don’t have the prep school backgrounds etc. but we still make our way up the hard way. Now I know I may sound hypocritical as I am a preppy myself but the fact is there are SOO FEW people like me and thats a fact. Most have to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. A new educated elite is developing, Obama’s dad for instance went to Harvard as well. And Ivy educated blacks are marrying other ivy educated black and having ivy educated black kids. Slowly but surely an aristocracy is developing where none existed. And then we will see blacks progressing. So stop talking down to us ! We are smart too. And I WILL get into Harvard by my own brains and bootstraps thank you very much !

^ i’m a URM… stop ur *****ing. im not even an english native speaker

ur not wasting ur time, anything is possible

the weird thing is…
i would take practice exams and get higher scores, i got 1920 today for the practice test…

&& i dont think timing is really the issue (i didn’t time myself for the last three practice exams) because when i was taking the real SAT, i had time left over.

that leaves a huge ??? in my head.

dont worry about it. stranger things have happened than you getting into Harvard with that sat score.

its half way through my junior year and im freaaaaking out.

You should definitely retake the SAT if you can tho.

oh im retaking them in march.

so any suggestions on how i should improve are more than welcome
pleasee.

stop studying…my score went up 150 when the second time i took… when i didn’t study and just relaxxxxed :]
