AMA show

Anyone else watching. I feel like I’m in some sort of alternative universe. And Adam Lambert hasn’t even performed yet.

I’m watching. I missed the beginning because I was watching Amazing Race. I just tuned in when Lady Gaga was on. I don’t get Lady Gaga. What was up with the flaming piano and her breaking the bottles over the keyboard?

This show makes me feel old.

it’s been pretty low key since lady gaga. There were several before her that were pretty out there.

Exactly what I was thinking!!!

Adam Lambert’s performance

Well I’m speechless.

Adam Lambert’s performance was…OMG! Guaranteed it will be edited for west coast viewing. The singing itself was the same as when on Idol with the wailing, but the guys on leashes and the grabbing the guys head while the face was in his crotch and humping was just over the top…
So disappointing.

If you haven’t seen it…it’s already on You Tube.

thanks but once was enough - more than enough actually! I was hoping I had somehow misinterpreted the face in his crotch humping. I was looking forward to his performance - expected it to be over the top but, well, ugh.

I really feel like an old fogey after watching that entire show.

Another voice from Fogeyville here. I only watched parts of the show (missed Adam, but am heading to Youtube ASAP). I was mostly appalled by the ridiculously overdone production numbers that completely eclipsed the singing. So much artifice and so little music. The recording industry is in much pain these days, and there was an awful lot of desperation on that stage. Carrie Underwood looked absurd in the silly eyelashes and diaper get-up. Whitney Houston at least just stood there and sang, but without her upper register (which I guess she doesn’t even attempt to use these days–a good thing), she’s a shadow of her former self. But I actually get a kick out of Lady Gaga’s shenanigans because she seems to be totally tongue in cheek about everything, just a smart cookie playing the game for all it’s worth with no pretense that it’s about anything other than raking in the dough. Flames! Breaking bottles! It’s always a hoot anticipating what she’ll come up with next. And under it all the girl can actually sing and play the piano very well. (Her pre-Gaga Youtube videos, from when she was just Stefani Germanotta, reveal that quite clearly.) I’m much more offended by “singers” like Rihanna, who can’t stay in tune, ever, and Britney Spears, whose voice just curdles my ears. They’re about sex, not music. I think of Adam Lambert as the male version of Lady Gaga–a good voice (not one I happen to care for, though) cloaked in an outrageous persona for the sake of making big bucks.

Unlike Madonna and Britney, lady GAGA has a good voice (put to a bad use, I think).

OMG. The announcer just said, “…and the preformance from Adam Lambert that everyone will be talking about tomorrow”. I guess they have not edited much for us on the West Coast. I think I’ll go upstairs and fold laundry now. There is a reason I prefer music on the radio - I don’t get to see the cr@p, I only get to hear it.

OK, not enough laundry to fold, I got to see the edited version. Adam’s performance was like a really bad AGT act - as he and his freak-ballet dancers were gyrating on the stage, I was hoping that someone would buzz him.

edited!! You lucky thing! How did you get edited? Wish I’d seen an edited version, or no version.

I had to google AGT. When I realized it meant America’s Greatest talent I had to agree - I think it would have been buzzed 3 times. After it was over I kept thinking the expression on my face during it must have looked a bit like Simon Cowell’s expression during that dreadful Fantasia guest appearance last AI season. To use a lovely English expression, I was gobsmacked.

They did edit Adam Lambert for the West Coast. I’d seen this thread before it aired here and told my husband about it. He watched and said he didn’t think it was as bad as some of the other stuff. I watched on You Tube with the sound off and realized it looked sanitized on our TV. Why did they air it that way on the East Coast? I thought these shows always had some kind of delay since the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction. Are we to believe he didn’t rehearse it that way? That no one knew and ten seconds wasn’t enough time to edit? Come on.

That was like Rocky Horror Picture Show on steroids. I’m not too scandalized since I’d been warned, but I do wonder what he was doing to the girl on the bar above his head.

So disappointed. First we watched The Next Iron Chef on DVR, then fast forwarded AMAs to what turned out to be the Eminem performance, which neither H or I much understood. Green Day, and Taylor Swift’s award, gave us a little hope, but Adam was a huge letdown. What happened to the open, heartening and talented fellow we voted for? If I didn’t know D had already ordered his album for me as a Christmas present, I wouldn’t buy it.

The highlight of the night was my favorite becoming the Next Iron Chef!

Adam out-GaGa’d Lady GaGa. I’m sure she’s not happy this morning. I never enjoy these shows very much because very few performances are actually about the singing. The crazy choreographed pseudo-sex didn’t bother me and I’m hardly scandalized by that because it’s nothing new. What did bother me was that he shortchanged his true talent with a performance like that, and, sadly, he didn’t sound very good.

I wasn’t a fan of his when he was on American Idol and last night’s performance was exactly what I expected from him. Watch his performances on you tube (not the American Idol performances) and see how similar last night’s performance is to them.

Not all of his youtube performances are similar to last night’s, nysmile, even the non-AI ones. He has performed for many years in various types of venues - clubs, bars, musical theatre, benefit performances. They certainly have not all been like last night’s, probably not even a majority. My guess is that that performance was tailored to fit the show last night, as was every other performer’s.

I never said that all of his performances on you tube were similar. There are performances on you tube that are very similar to what he performed last night. His strong fans will probably stay with him. My point is that I wasn’t a fan before and I’m still not a fan after last night’s performance. Again-IMO, last night’s performance was exactly what I had expected from him.

[Lambert says man-on-man kiss at AMA happened ‘in the moment’ - CNN.com](Lambert says man-on-man kiss at AMA happened 'in the moment' - CNN.com)

You can hear Adam’s explanation of his performance in his own words.

Interesting that the comments section in the CNN article everyone is just talking about the kiss and saying it is a double standard that people object. Really that did not bother me as near much as the face on the crotch/humping and just the overall awfulness of the performance. Lady Gaga is a bit OTT but she manages to sing at the same time. Mind you I never enjoyed the screechy Adam performances on AI though loved the performances like Mad World. But I don’t recall any of the AI performances being as screechy as last nights. Just awful.

So many of the performances were overdone last night. Just way too much odd costuming and thrusting going on! I found myself really enjoying Kelly Clarkson, such a relief to hear someone actually singing. Guess I am ready for my zimmer frame (walker) now.

I’ll have to you tube it when I am not at work since I am on the West Coast and I didn’t watch even the edited version.
Swimcastmom…I am with you. Ready for the walker and the disney sweatshirt :)
