Amazon Refund

Just ranting. I returned an item and Amazon credit it not back to my credit card but put in in an amazon gift card, basically a store credit! That was extremely sneaky and immoral. I wasn’t aware they did that and assumed the refund was not issued. The darn thing is nowhere on their website, I could find how to reach their customer service. I gave up and called my credit card company to dispute the charge.

I thought that when you did a return they had a drop down box to select how you wanted the return credited. The last time I processed one they did not even have me return the item. They just credited it. But then again I order enough not to worry where the credit goes.

I had a similar issue (was my fault because I had charged it to a different card that was not my default card) and just contacted Amazon support through the chat function. It was taken care of immediately and the amount was credited to my account.

When you do your return they ask how you want your money refunded - either an Amazon credit or to your credit card. It might default to the Amazon credit and you have to change it. It’s not hard, but you have to pay attention. I order from Amazon a lot and several times I have accidentally not changed it. But I don’t really care because I order from Amazon enough that I use my credits easily.

If you contact their support department they will likely fix it. Amazon’s customer service is usually VERY accommodating.

Here is where you can chat or if you don’t want to do that you can click on “Need help on the phone? We can call you.” They will call back quickly.

I couldn’t find need help on the phone or any live chat. All I found was virtual assistant. Finally googled for a phone number and yes they are going to take care of it. I returned it in the same way as I always have as far as I remember and I always got it credited back. They must have changed something. I never use a gift card and I doubt I will remember that I have funds available in a gift card.

Just FYI - amazon will use any gift card funds first when you place an order (regardless of what you have as your default payment).

Amazon will default to gift card funds but I believe you can uncheck a box to change that.

I have found their customer service to be accommodating.

Yes, that is a change in recent months. It used to just go to my credit card. Guess they figured out a way to make people buy even more from them.

There should be a help button on the website and then you can email someone.

I have found Amazon customer service very helpful as well.

Amazon has amazing customer service, I returned something on a few occasions because it was the wrong order, and they just gave me the money and let me keep it. No wonder Jeff bezos is the richest man alive, he takes care of his customers!!

Amazon recently changed the refund to default to a store credit. You would have to consciously select refund to the credit card. If you order anything in the future, the credit is used up first.

This helps them lower costs because vendors pay about 3% if you use your credit card. I believe they may have to pay another % to process a refund transaction, but i’m not sure. So, I’m OK with them defaulting to store credit since they are so accommodating about making returns easy. For a return you basically can take something unwrapped to their Amazon Lockbox locations and just show a code. They pack/ship it all back.

Yep, happened to me before I realized they had a default return for store credit checked. Right below it is a circle to check for it to go back to your CC.

I agree, pretty sneaky.

I tried the help button. You get Q&A or virtual assistant. No email or phone number listed.

I just today visited the virtual assistant because I got texts two days ago saying I had received 2 items that have not yet arrived. The assistant transferred me to a person,. I had to supply my phone number, and the phone rang seconds later, They are sending another of one item; for the second item I had a choice between a credit card refund or a gift card,…I chose the latter because it’s quicker, and it will get used soon for sure.

It was a bit tricky to find the assistant–I actually couldn’t find it on Amazon so I did a google search and the right page came right up. Pretty decent customer service.

I shouldn’t have to do that. It should use the original methods of payment as default. For anything else, they should seek an active agreement, not trick people into a gift card.

@mommdc I tried that link of course and clicked return and refund. Doesn’t help. It makes you circled around. That is NOT a good customer service.

It shouldn’t be tricky. I also googled for the phone number and got it. But I don’t always to think to google for a customer service number. It should be provided on their website. That is NOT a good customer service.

Another weird thing. I called Amazon to talk about refund method. They asked my name and then started rattling off what I do, where my job used to be, etc. Most creepy. Is that what a good customer service does? Do they have customer info on their file?

Immoral? Wow.
