Ah, speaking of Ben Folds. As much as I have a crush on Harry, I would have to put Ben Folds in an even higher bracket of having a crush. He may not be model handsome, but his humor and intelligence get triple points, and he is humble. Harry is the crush you would date, and Ben I would bring home for papa to meet.

Back to the singers … I looked up Jillian, the one that was the girl that was bullied and she cried a lot, and she has quite a following with her music. I hope she goes far so I can hear more of her music.

Except that Ben has been married and divorced four times, and Harry is still married to the mother of his kids after twenty years!

Well then, there must be many women out there that like something about Ben … So much for taking him home to
Papa! I think I will just have to stay in my ignorant celebrity crush state.

I think AI may have noticed that part of the appeal of The Voice is the good-natured bantering among the judges and is trying to create that camaraderie among this new panel. It seems to be working so far.

I abandoned Idol a couple of years ago. I tried and enjoyed the auditions last week. Really like the “refresh” so far.

I like how they have fewer of the stupid/insulting/crazy auditions shown this year but I really wish they’d eliminate them altogether. There are too many unstable people out there who clearly think that they have talent and it’s awkward to watch them have a meltdown when they’re rejected. I don’t know who enjoys that. I’d rather watch more of the kids they are sending through to the Hollywood round.

I prefer that to the ridiculous amount of conflict between judges in past years, which is why I also bailed after the first 4 or 5 seasons. I heard the Mariah/Nicki Minaj stuff just went way overboard.

I used to enjoy the show but haven’t watched in several years; I’m going to check it out this week. Wednesday?

I thought the last contestant (sang Grenade) was very beautiful. She kind of reminded me of Miley Cyrus. Great look, great personality. The judges loved her. I thought she sang very flat though.

American Idol requires lots of versatility. Guess I’ll keep watching to see who can make it once they are required to get out of their comfort zones.

1moremom, I believe it is Wednesdays and Thursday nights at 8 pm EST for now. I love how intellectual this thread is, haha. Such a nice break from some of the other anxiety-laden CC threads. I am a closet AI fan- I like to marvel at the talented singers and laugh at the bad ones… great for stress-reduction.

I am enjoying that there are far fewer of the bad auditions this year, but I am finding that it is almost more painful to hear the “no’s” now, because there are so many who do go through.

Love the banter between harry and Keith. Harry’s audition, very cute. Last year Keith had to keep the two ladies from fighting, I have to believe he loves this year so much more. I think a lot of the bad auditions were people just trying to get on TV. I do think a lot of them were aware of their lack of ability. Some of these kids have amazing stories. I also like the older contestants who feel this " is their last shot".

The role play between Keith and Harry was hysterical. They better come up with lots of new material because something tells me JLo is going to be late to a lot of auditions. Agree completely with Nrdsb4… last girl sang flat as a pancake. She reminded me of the runner-up on SYTYCD last season or the one before!

I think a lot of them really do believe they are talented, and have probably been told that by friends and family for years. Then the producers pick them up for comic relief and they never realize that’s their purpose and that they have no chance. I think it’s mean. This year they reduced the number of bad auditions significantly. Maybe next year they’ll be gone altogether.

I agree, MommaJ, and those who believed they have talent are the ones I was thinking of in my earlier post. That young man with the white basketball shirt on comes to mind. He had many family members there waiting for him and he was truly devastated when he didn’t get the golden ticket. He truly thought he was wonderful, and he wasn’t anywhere close to having talent. They were humiliating him. When tens of thousands of kids audition in every city, you just know that they’re picking these awful singers who believe they’re great, intentionally, for so-called entertainment value. The ones who are doing it on a lark are a different story.

In the early seasons, we saw many of those terrible singers who believed they were great. Many of them were really belligerent when Simon told them the truth. Yes, he was usually quite rude about it, but he usually was right.

I really enjoyed the Utah auditions tonight! Lots of talent. Only wish JLo would say “no” a little more. Her bar is a little lower than Keith and Harry.

I thought the videos of HC Jr. and Keith when they were 10 and 16 respectively were a hoot. Jennifer was 22 in her video, so not as much of a stretch.

Based on comments they make, Harry and Keith are much more knowledgeable about music theory, and as beautiful as she is and such a great dancer, JLo’s vocal talents aren’t in the same ballpark either. Maybe that’s why she has trouble saying no to kids who probably are more talented vocally than she is. Just speculating.

@Nrdsb4 I agree … Harry talks about diminished something or other and pentatonics and JLo seems to focus on the vocal quality of the raw voice. I think the reality is that the best singers have both, so I think Harry will prove himself when the first Hollywood filter sends many home. The ones that only Jennifer and Keith voted through to Hollywood seem to me to be the ones that are less likely to make it through as the limits in the current ability or inexperience will show more clearly in Hollywood.
