American Idol 2018 and Beyond

I loved the second episode. I can not stand The Voice. The “ooo I’m gonna hover over the button and am maybe possibly about to push the button and turn around “ posturing makes me absolutely crazy.

We have a friend who is going to be on this season so I will watch just to support her. I also didn’t think the judges had any sort of chemistry at all. Katy Perry doesn’t impress me and none of the judges seem to know what to say.

Let us know your friend’s name and when they will be appearing. Love it when there’s a thread connection!

Re Katy Perry’s ickiness: after all, this is a woman who married Russell Brand.

I am hoping NBC has formally met with Katy and discussed what constitutes sexual harassment and that it is applicable to both men and women.

Lionel Richie did not have a good premiere week either, IMO. I thought he was condescending during both shows. On Monday after an audition that went well (do not recall the artist), he said “My judges” will now comment… Is he in charge? Perhaps he should have said “My fellow judges…” whether ABC made him the head judge or not. So far, it appears to me that he’s having a difficult time coming to grips with the age differential between himself and the other 2 judges.

I’m not sure what demographic the producers are aiming for. The judges’ antics at the beginning tonight were just silly, middle school humor.

The whoopee cushion humor was a little juvenile, got even worse when they used it as an udder for the cow milking demonstration and, by the time Luke was explaining “udder lotion” to Katy, I was feeling downright uncomfortable. And if anyone else in the room was feeling uncomfortable, especially the young Country lady auditioning, that’s sexual harassment once again.

Yes. I thought the udder conversation was getting uncomfortable. I know from experience that reality TV is not totally unscripted, and the show is taped so they had every chance to edit that out and didn’t. Which makes me ask what the producers are trying to achieve. I’ve watched every episode of AI since the first season and I’m not really liking this.

Agreeing that the chit chat and antics have crossed the ridiculous line. Ugh.

Re. the auditions… not a great night, imo. Have a feeling ABC (NOT NBC, as I said in an earlier post referring to the network airing the show) is saving the best auditions for Monday nights.

Since this is a college forum, I’ll point out that one of the contestants that made it through, Jonny B, is a student at College of the Holy Cross

I’m joining the party late. I am watching for the first time tonight.

What did you think of the guy who sang the song for his late mom? The one who was adopted? I thought his voice was just okay (but so are many successful singers-they have the “it” factor separate from technical singing), but I thought the song was quite lovely.I think he could have a future in songwriting.

I’m watching for the first time right now. Last Monday’s show. Surprisingly, the one judge I thought I’d dislike the most (Luke Bryan) is my “favorite”. Katie is kind of hilarious if you laugh AT her, but also so much inappropriateness with the young guys! And Lionel just seems to think somehow he’s the judge in charge.

Overall, it sure does feel like the old format. I just don’t know if I can sit through these auditions. I think I’ll prefer when we get to top 12 or where ever they start the live shows or should I just say - when it’s NOT auditions!

The sisters thing was weird and disturbing. I don’t believe for one minute that one sister was there with no intention of auditioning.

Yeah, I’m sure they were both there to audition. It was edited for drama. The older sister sang really well. I liked several of the guys who wrote and sand songs for family members. I’m liking Luke more than I expected, too.

These auditions are killing me! I truly hope the actual show is better than this. They’re ruining it!

JustaMom, if you think the auditions are killing you, wait until Hollywood Week airs. After that, it gets better. Hang in there!

@justamom, have you ever watched AI before? This episode seemed just like the show has always been in the first auditions phase, though in the early days they had a lot more really awful singers.

I like the drama of the Hollywood shows. Most of the controversies are manufactured, I believe, but they were still fun.

For me, here’s Hollywood Week… in a nutshell:

One artist frantically looking for a team to join (assuming they select their own teams but I prefer it when the producers form teams).

One team happy and harmonious and retires for the night by half past 11.

One team gets absolutely no sleep, pulling an all-nighter, while the remaining teams practice late into the night and retire at various times into the early pre-dawn hours.

One artist has a major meltdown on national TV and switches teams.

One artist has a major meltdown on national TV and goes to bed, leaving his team to practice without him.

One team will get the lecture, likely from Lionel Richie, of how horribly bad they were (they were) but at least one artist from that team, a favorite in the auditions, will still get through.

I would love Hollywood Week if it centered on the team building and rehearsal process rather than the exact same types of drama each and every season. If you’ve seen one Hollywood Week, you have REALLY seen them all!

But, I’m still going to watch…

I’ve seen snippets of the audition process and Hollywood week in the past. This is my first time trying to watch all the way through.
