American university c/o 2021 rd

@gk1733 i got that email too! im very confused i dont know what this spring 2018 thing means

I would say the Mentorship Program would be called prestigious in the fact that it represent students who have higher stats than needed to get into American. These are students who would be able to manage an internship in the fall while attending classes, and their application/resume indicate a strong sense of experience and self that they would succeed right off the bat, even without being a part of the fall freshman class. These are excellent characteristics.

Does the student want a typical freshman experience or hit the ground running with an intership this fall? Keep in mind the student isn’t matriculating in the fall and mentorship will not transfer if a student decides DC is not for them. Research the classes mentorship students can take. At least one or two pertain only to mentorship students. Are mentorship students given the same priority as fall freshman when signing up for classes? Mentorship students are not invited to the new freshman receptions and in the fall Mentorship has its own welcome. It’s truly about the experience the student wants and willingness to pay full tuition/expenses for it even while having other options from other institutions that include merit aid.

I believe American looks at these students as very desirable but knows that these students have other options. American is concerned with offering Fall admissions and having it not being accepted. AU may look at your fafsa for possible affordability. American has nothing to lose by offering Mentorship because it’s non-matriculating and not represented admissions yield.

Waitlisted with a 4.5 GPA (highest possible in my school), 1550 SAT, senatorial internship, field organizing work on a number of campaigns, state director of a political action committee and 501©(4), newly appointed member of my Democratic state committee, board member of state chapter of High School Democrats, debate captain, student body treasurer, co-chair of local DSA chapter, etc., etc.

This was supposed to be one of my safeties, lol. Thankfully, I was accepted to Swarthmore last week. Looking forward to seeing what Ivy Day will bring.

Accepted with a 3.3 GPA 1250 SAT.
Honestly shocked and didn’t think I’d get in. I’m going for journalism and I’m head editor of my student newspaper, did a journalism internship and 2 journalism summer programs so that helped my brand? I also am captain of cross country, and do a lot of community service.
I did show a lot of demonstrated interest. Local info session, flew down from MA Junior year, did an overnight senior year, did a local interview which went well.
Over the moon shocked and excited and will be attending in the fall, especially since they gifted me $42,000 in grants.

Got my small envelope today, waitlisted.

35 ACT, 4.2 weighted GPA (3.7 unweighted). Solid ECs with 5 leadership positions. Applied to the school of Public Policy, which I imagine is quite competitive.

Demonstrated interest: did reach out to my regional admissions officer but never received a reply. Applied for Honors and Frederick Douglass Scholars. Visited last summer and attended one of their webinars.

I applied to American with my original Common App essay, which wasn’t all that good. I ultimately rewrote it and submitted a better version to other schools.

I did like American quite a bit but I was also accepted at Washington in St. Louis and most likely would have picked WashU over American. I don’t think yield protection is a real thing and I won’t pretend for a second that my application was “too good” for them or anything like that. I’m a little surprised, I was expecting to get into American, but I was getting a little too cocky for my own good and this was a swift check to my ego that I definitely needed.

Yield protection is most definitely in play at AU. Their acceptance rate has dropped nearly thirty points in the last five or six years alone, while applications have only increased somewhat. They know that applicants like us wouldn’t likely attend and don’t want to grant us acceptance at the risk of seeing their yield rates drop. We’re now essentially being granted a second chance to reaffirm our interest (though I don’t plan to keep a spot on the waitlist).

I’m from California and haven’t gotten my letter yet but I got an email this morning saying “Learn More About Your Spring Admission to American University” and contained congratulations on your admission to AU. It’s nice to know I was accepted but it’s a little annoying that after the university has pressed so much into getting decisions by mail, I receive mine for a semester I didn’t apply to via email.

@sossenior I am in the same boat as you. Did you get into the Mentorship program for fall 2017?

Did everyone who was accepted for the Spring of 2018 get invited to the mentorship program? Or are there some offered Spring 2018 admission without mentorship invitation?

Has the mentorship only been offered to those who can full pay?

I agree with the yield protection. My son had similar stats with 2 yrs of demonstrated interest. Leadership positions with related international work experience. He was waitlisted and disappointed b/c although qualified for better schools loved AU. Will now wait for Ivy Day as well.

@sophomoreinhs I think so because the email invites me to learn more about it but I haven’t gotten my letter so I don’t know for sure

Yep, 31 act and 3.9 gpa and waitlisted. Pretty crappy because this wasn’t my “safety”- it was somewhere that I was actually interested in going. American needs to learn that not all students with my stats or higher have better options that they’re going to take instead.

Got onto the waitlist! Excited for a chance of admittance! (I’m from Louisiana) Does anyone know the chances of getting off the waitlist?

I got a spring 2018 admittance via email (still haven’t gotten my physical letter) and I’m from California. I was actually really surprised I got in.
I have a 3.9 WGPA, 1300 SAT, 28 ACT. I think my common app essay was really good, and I applied for AU Scholars (didn’t expect or intend on getting it, I just wanted to demonstrate interest). I definitely definitely believe they use yield protection considering the fact that I got in and many more qualified people didn’t

waitlisted. 4.3 gpa 29 act. 1330 sat no subject tests 17/123 good ecs no demonstrated interest. env science major. not first choice. no email could not create admitted student id beforehand best wishes to everyone. accepted bc rpi villanova and a few others. a little suprised i was not accepted

Got the email about spring admission, but no letter yet. I will have to do more research about the mentorship program – don’t think it’s something I can afford but worth a look!

Congrats @nylkoorb Did you get the fall 2017 mentorship opportunity?

I got the package, email, and was able to create a portal account beforehand, here, in WA.

Admitted for Spring 2018 – with the mentorship program offer – and no monetary support of any kind.

I’ve expected the lack of financial support since I’m an international student and will be bringing in, hopefully, ~60-semester college credits – about 2 years worth, as a freshman. I’m graduating high school with an HS dip. and an Associate Degree (AA) since I’m doing a dual-enrollment program at a Community College.

Test-optional
No AP, etc.
9th and 10th GPA: 2.86 (Weighted)
11th and 12th: 3.96 / 4.0 (all community college courses)

29 act, 3.8 uw gpa, bunch of political ECs, visited twice… rejected

Certainly disappointed

@CadenCarver Did you recieve the physical letter?
