America's pastime: Hope springs eternal . . . (aka the baseball thread)

I’m glad he’s hitting again.

I will go back to the cat later today. I had to put the house “rescue” puppy up in honor of zoozermom’s new rescue pup, though. It takes me back to when she was all tiny and babyish instead of a big girl dog.

Back by popular demand and dressed for this afternoon’s weather . . .

The down side of a baseball team that is in contention is that now I’m staying up too late to see what could happen. It’s actually not a foregone conclusion for a change.

Okay, last night’s Mets-Phillies game was just bizarre in every way. Not a typical Harvey Day, though he still only allowed 3 over 6 and got the win, but DWright getting hurt really hurts.

Enough blown calls, replay silliness, thrown out manager, and hit batsmen for a month, never mind one game.

Harvey’s characterization of plunking Utley rather than IBB, was a marvel of deadpan: “It just got away from me.” And Utley, to his credit, seemed to perfectly understand (hit HR off Harvey earlier, and then two Mets were hit in a much more painful way by Philly pitcher, injuring one of them.)

Ah, baseball, in all its weirdness.

Saintkid #1 loved the unwritten rules of baseball. If you’re plunked on purpose you generally know why and accept it as long as it wasn’t dirty. The zone is where the umpire says it is. If you throw a pitch in the same place enough times the umpire will start giving it to you. If your manager gets fussy about anything your zone will get suddenly smaller. And of course, the all encompassing “that’s baseball”

@kgos16 So far Rollins and Kendrick have been great! Won tickets to opening day, and he Rollins was the big hero. Then last night, it was Kendrick’s turn to be the hero. Dodger pitching is sketchy at the moment, but I know Kershaw will turn it around and getting Ryu and Jansen back will help. I’m struggling today though, the game ended late, and I was at Coachella over the weekend. I need to just sleep this weekend. PS. Sorry for the game last night @saintfan

As for the speed of the game, I like the languid pace. At the ballpark it’s great for the atmosphere, and via broadcast it just allows Vin Scully more time to spin his tales. I don’t know what I’ll do when he retires.

@trojanchick99 I am catching two games in LA this weekend…can’t wait!

I am so over Fernando Rodney ~X(

I’m also over Taijuan Walker. Two starts and 14 runs given up. Another perfectly good evening wasted. Thank goodness tomorrow is an off day. I hope you had a nice birthday @kgos16!

Aww thank you @saintfan! Besides the two hours of dental work this morning, it was great.

Well if it’s any consolation, watching that game felt like 2 hours of dental work. At least after the dentist you have something positive to show for it.

Hey, Ladies and Gents,

Not a frequent visitor anymore, but I’ll follow this thread. Not sure I’ll have much to write about, though, as I’m a lifelong Cub fan. Very character building.

The atmosphere at Wrigley Field is changing too much for me to go much anymore. Every year there are more night games, and the clientele is so different from day games, and not for the good, IMV.

I didn’t go to any games last season. We’ll see about this, though for much of the summer I’ll be abroad (yay).

Have fun with your teams. If the Cubs finish 80/80 or thereabouts, I’ll consider it a great season. Heck, if they wind up having a better record than the White Sox, that will be great, too.

Finally, may the Mets come in last. That is all.

^gosh, really? I always root for the Cubs (when we’re not playing them.) Usually don’t get that kind of animosity out of the conference (Heck, from anyone not a Philly fan, usually. ) :frowning:

Why the Mets hate? They haven’t been a contender in years! But they are off to a good start this year. Go Mets!
My Rangers are visiting saintfan’s Mariners this weekend. I will tune in just to see Nellie’s eyebrows. LOL

I’m pretty sure that my team has now clinched the top of the leader board in most runners left on base. The’ve one a great job of loading the bases these last several days and have nothing to show for it. Thank gawd for Felix! WIthout good pitching they might have a 4 game losing streak . . . oh, never mind.

Felix is amazing. But I’m hoping the Rangers come back and win this one.

Hey - we gave you guys a gift last night (stranded runners) - we need this one bad.

Finally . . . a bit of relief and a game with a finish worth staying up for.

Seven in a row–ya gotta believe! And today is Harvey Day. I LOVE baseball!
