Congrats to all who got in. Amherst is an amazing life changing place – in all ways good. One truly doesn’t realize how special it is until you get there. Choosing to attend was without a doubt one of my best life decisions!
My son was waitlisted. So disappointing as he also got the same news from UVA and John Hopkins this week. It’s absolutely insane to get into these schools now with the heavy influx of international students and the common app, which I would argue has added to the frenzy. In my day most people applied to 3-5 schools. Not 15-20!

Essays(1-10): I felt like my Common App essay was ok, against the rest of the people that applied it might have been a solid 6.5. I wrote about how sports and academics were connected in my life and tried to be funny and honest.
I liked my supplemental essay, I wrote about crashing my car into a power pole and thinking about my own mortality. An 8? Maybe? I have no idea. Neither of them were fantastic. I just did my best.
Recommendations (1-10): My recommendations were 10’s, I got one from my math teacher, english teacher, and principal. I’ve been going to the same school since Pre-K and I know all of them personally, and they all had good things to say.
Additional Comments: I honestly can’t believe I got in. Grinnell accepts twice as many people and put me on the waitlist, I figured Carleton was the last school I had a real shot at. Anyone that’s using this thread to “chance themselves” next year or whenever, don’t. Make your best application, send it in, and forget about it. Control what you can control and hope for the best.
I was waitlisted.

Essays(1-10): Common app was a 10, I think it was super super unique because it was about a personal experience I had (not to be cocky). My supplement was ok, id say like 7 or 8 /10, definitely good, but not revolutionary, I talked about my activism work.
Recommendations (1-10): Both were 10’s though I obviously havent read them. I had very close relationships with both teachers.
Additional Comments: I’m shocked and so so happy. Still waiting on a few other schools, but honestly I would still be so happy even if the rest of the schools I applied to rejected me.
