Hello forum,
So, i’m going to be applying for the fall 2012 semester. I am currently in 12th grade and the reason I did not apply this year as my parents were dead set it that applying this year would hurt my grades and they wouldnt pay the tuition if I applied.

I took the SAT tests in 11th grade and my scores were 2130 in the SAT I and 2250 in the SAT II. My highschool transcripts rank me among the top 15% students.I have already gotten the recommendations written from my teachers and they are quite good.

My extra curricular activities include:
Music:
I can play the guitar, bass, drums and the piano.
I am the guitarist for my school band and have won awards.

Sports:
I am the captain for my school’s basketball team. Although we suck
National level awards for karate.

I have 200 hours of community service and am the community service captain of my school. I am also the member of the science, astronomy, math and computer club of my school.

The colleges I want to get into include:
Harvard(long shot), UC Berkeley, UC LA, Cornell, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, University of Michigan, Virgina Tech and the Univeristy of Minnesota(my father and grandfather both went to it) although my grandfather did get accepted into both Harvard and MIT.

I will not be applying for any financial aid.

What all can I do between the time that school ends and the time the applications are due to help my application? I will be applying for Computer Engineering.

This is completely unrelated and not at all helpful, but Strats > Les Pauls
:P

Whats your main guitar?

well, you’ll be applying after a gap year, so be sure to think up a good explanation to write to colleges when you apply later…
Mainly, try and score high on your board exams, and IMO, take the SAT I again (after your Boards ofc). Try and bag a score of about 2200+ and then you’ll stand a chance at Harvard and Cornell (yeah, i know but the stereotype does come true).

Blackadder, It’s 2008 Gibson Les Paul Traditional sunburst
and it is my main guitar. What about you?

And thanks for the advice columbia. Btw does doing an internship help in the case of engineering?

They don’t really expect a high school student to do internships #justsaying :)

It adds, but if you’re going to be doing something just to strengthen your application, forget it. Do it only if you really want to work as an intern somewhere.

Awesome. I use an Ibanez S470. Cheap, I know
but it handles everything I want to do neatly. I run it through a Vox Tonelab ST. Tube goodness :D

Oh and I’ll just reiterate what everyone’s saying (so as to avoid my post being classified as spam): try to retake your SAT. 2130 certainly isn’t bad, but it is on the lower end of the spectrum for the universities you’ll apply to. Aaaaand they do expect more from internationals. Do something productive in your gap year. Internship, for example. Although I don’t think that will last you the whole year.

No they don’t.

Its just that the competition among internationals makes the AdCom select highly distinguished applicants (>> Domestic students)…
