Another new refrigerator with door in door

I know there’s been a couple of discussions on refrigerators, but we will need one real soon. Maybe even today. I do not want the new french doors. I like the side by side because the little kids can get to their fruit. So I saw one that was door in door. Basically, you can get to the milk and stuff on the door from the outside. Which to me sounds wonderful because I can get out the gallon of milk without the little toddler then being able to root around while the whole door is open.

Does anybody have one of these and do you have any problems with it or wish you didn’t have it?

My last 2 fridges were side by side with the door in the door. I used my first one a lot but not the second. I think they cheapened the door in the door on the second fridge, so even though it was the same fridge, we no longer used the milk storage door. I have gone to a French door fridge which is fine but lacking in the capacity to make decent amounts of ice. I think I will probably go back to a side by side fridge if and when this fridge dies.

Isn’t it sad that appliances last so little now? I think my mom had her fridge for the whole 40 years she lived in her house. This will be our fourth and we’ve only been here 27 years.

Yes it is sad. Way too much cheap plastic in large appliances and poor workmanship overseas.

I know…our first fridge in our house lasted almost 20 years. I don’t expect the new one to last ten…which is fine because I don’t like it all that much. We got a French door…and love the bottom freezer, but hate the space in the fridge part. The ice maker thing takes up one whole side of what could be door shelves.

We will go back to a side by side too…if they are still making them when we need new.

^And I hate my side by side and would love to go to a French door. I can’t fit anything in my freezer and it’s impossible to find stuff. I don’t need an ice maker though.

Our first fridge lasted over 10 years. Our 2nd one lasted about 5 and not sure how long this one will last. We’ve nowv had it a few years and it seems to be OK. In college, I bought an OLD hotpoint fridge and it was still going strong when I resold it for the same price I had paid for it originally, for the next students who wanted. It had a little itty bitty ice compartment but was mainly a fridge and kept things the proper temperatures.

My folks have been going through fridges at a very rapid clip. I don’t think they make them nearly as well as “in the old days.”

I have only had traditional fridges, with the freezer on the top 1/3 of the fridge and one door for the fridge. I was never a fan of the side by side, tho most of my sibs favor that style. I never had a door within a door and never had an icemaker.

I have a French door with the drawer in the middle. I can’t tell you how much I love this thing. I would like to kiss it every time I open it. We had the door in door last time and it was fine, but this one keeps exactly the stuff we use most often in the most accessible spot. We bought it last year as an after-thought to the stove of my dream, but I turned out to be happier with the fridge. Go figure.

i too like my almost new french door, with drawers inside, and 2 bottom drawers. even tho i live in FL, I didn’t get the outside ice maker. I have had that break before. GE Monogram

Hmmm. I guess I assumed when looking at that door in the middle that it would be a freezer. Maybe I’ll look at that. Basically I want: more freezer space than a french door refrigerator; Having the fruit drawer within reach of a toddler. And I think it would be nice to be able to get the mikl out without having the whole door open.

I swear I saw a fridge that had that fourth section…and it could either be fridge OR freezer. Maybe that would be worth looking up.

We got a new fridge two years ago, only the first fridge we have purchased, if you don’t count the bar sized one we used for a few years, when we couldn’t afford anything else.
( previous fridge was a hand me down from my mom, that lasted us over 20 years)
I did not want water in the door as from my observations, it’s more trouble than it’s worth, and it takes away from interior space, significantly.
We ended up with a Maytag, freezer on the bottom.
Looked at French doors, but I decided that a solid front looked much cleaner. I did not like the pulls on the French doors.
LOVE freezer on the bottom.
Drawers are very accessible. Light is great.
It’s also wonderful to have refrigerated stuff right at eye level.
No bending. Drawers for produce work amazingly well at controlling humidity.

OP, I saw one of those fridges when in Korea last fall, and was very impressed with that door for drinks. Far better for energy efficiency. No clue they were available in the US market.

My mom has that and I love it (she does, too.)

I do like French doors because I LOVE having the freezer on the bottom!

I don’t like side by side because things get lost in them (yes, I hate cleaning out the fridge…it’s my MOST HATED chore! Yes I do it, but grudgingly)

My mother just got this one with the French drawers and the drawer in the middle, and with water/ice in the door. I hate the water/ice thing and think it takes up way too much space, but love the drawer. Not for toddlers, but for my father (who acts like a toddler). He’s old and has trouble opening the doors, but in the drawer she puts his applesauce, yogurt, things for toast, cheese. It’s perfect for organizing all the sandwich stuff, cans of soda or juice. A toddler could get fruit or cheese sticks out.

" A toddler could get fruit or cheese sticks"

And a teenaged boy could keep his disgusting pig hands out of the rest of the fridge. And the leftovers would be safe from scavenging since a door and a drawer are too much to open in between naps.

Our 26 year old fridge has a little door in the door. Love it for getting and pouring milk and juice. We love it and many son always says he would like one like it. It is on its last legs and keeps leaking water but we didn’t think they made the door in doors any more so have been reluctant to replace it. Sounds like I need to have another look.

We have a bottom freezer and hate it. Things fall out between the slats in the basket all the time. It’s a GE and the plastic bins have cracked (and are $$$ to replace). Now the seals on the fridge door seem to be shot, as the door rubs and makes noise when closing and isn’t getting a good seal. It’s only five years old. Our kitchen will hold a 29" wide fridge, so I am tempted to get something inexpensive unless/until we remodel the kitchen and get a wider space for a better fridge.

I had the door in door back in the 80s, it worked great. We recently got a new frig and went with the French door with the extra separate drawer. I actually love it! My mother lives with us and I use that drawer for her stuff, if we have leftovers, I will put some there for her to access at her own speed, otherwise she never tackles the large containers. If you end up considering the French doors when you are at the store, then consider that drawer for kid snacks.
