In doing some poking around recently, I came across the “School Profile” form that many BS provide for college admissions folks so that they can get an “executive summary” view of a school. In some cases, this write-up has information that is NOT on the normal “Facts and Figures” PDFs you’ll find in the “Admissions” sections of websites. Worth rooting out for prospective parents, IMO.

Here are just a few that I could find quickly:

http://www.exeter.edu/documents/2012_Profile_for_College(1).pdf

https://www.emmawillard.org/sites/emmawillard.org/files/profile.pdf

http://www.standrews-de.org/data/files/gallery/ContentGallery/SchoolProfile201112_FINAL2_092011_2.pdf

One thing I’ve noticed is that different schools choose to disclose their test scores in different ways…some cite the “middle 50%”, some just provide the mean. Anyway, another place to find info…

Yeah, I’ve also noticed that schools choose to report either their MEDIAN SAT scores, or the MEAN scores. And the median scores are often higher than the mean.

School Profiles also often list the distribution of a class’s GPA and results for the AP exams.

We reviewed all the “School Profiles” for the schools that made our short list. I found the info valuable. I think all schools are supposed to record the the “middle 50%” on the profile but then can add additional info.

Another one:

@Momof7thgrader: Oddly, I don’t think I did check out all the “School Profiles” when we were looking at schools last app cycle…though I think some schools included them with view book mailings.

7D, I’ve gathered your D belongs to the ORM group that are considered “supposed to” be book smart. If so, those averages and medians don’t mean anything to her - she has to score higher, a lot higher to be in the game anyway! Just saying… :)

@DA: You don’t think I don’t know that by now? ;-P

The impetus for me digging around on various sites recently was an admittedly premature survey of a few schools on my younger daughter’s (SevenDaughterJr.?) radar (not necessarily the schools I linked to). I guess I was looking for some apples to apples info that might speak to rigor in schools with which we are not too familiar. Honestly, I am surprised that I wasn’t more up on the “College Profiles” thing before…or maybe I was and conveniently forgot post M10 2011.

Thanks dadofviolinist…I had looked on the SPS site (as it was on our short list last year) and couldn’t find it in the “College Counseling” subsection where most of these forms seem to live.
