Another "Where have we gone wrong?" thread

I guess I’m the sweeper. :)

jessie- yep, we talk about whether the woman goes back to work or not, and assume that the man will. continue. It’s not always the case, though, as many posters have said. We’re still evolving…
The primary reason for this, as I see it ,is the woman is physically out of the workforce for a while when she gives birth, and has to decide whether or not to “go back.” I’m not sure how we can get around it being mostly about the mother, even though the decision affects both partners.

I agree with this. We still have a long way to go to achieve it, apparently.

I’m beginning to see some changes…friends of ours have looked at the “who earns the higher salary/better benefits” and “who would be able to find something interesting part-time” issues, and in several cases, Dad is the one who’s home.

DH took paid paternity leave in 1990 – unheard of back then for law firms to offer it, much less to have someone actually take it!

One of the things that always bothered me a little was looking at the h’s social security statement and my own. I practically have nothing. :o

I always wonder : if society value motherhood so much, shouldn’t I have something to show for it ?

eta: Even the nannies I used to hire to do my “job” have social security.

Maybe we should work on changing the laws to reflect this value system!

This is what I’ve found to be very ironic! If I am taking care of MY OWN children, then it’s not really considered “working” ( because NO INCOME is generated). By contrast, if I were a nanny taking care of someone else’s kids, then it’s considered “working” !! Why is it that the exact same “job” can be viewed so differently by society? Why do we judge things only in terms of money ( income)? Why should we allow our own sense of self-worth be dictated by such shallow & superficial attitudes? By placing emphasis ONLY on the bread-winning role, we have essentially GLORIFIED & VALIDATED the ROLE traditionally played by MEN and totally dissed the role played by women traditionally !! Is that what gender equality is all about? Women becoming more like men?

About the ads ya’ll mentioned, guess i am a lousy consumer, I never noticed them before, I completely tune them out, but yes, I saw Alpaca ads, too.

I have AdBlock Plus installed on Firefox and don’t see any ads at all. :D

Hear hear !

And a stay home mom do far more than a nanny. Think paying bills, taking care of finances. Parent teacher conferences…
