Another Winter Weekend, Another Winter Storm

We just finished our walk. It’s 8 degrees, but the “feels like” is -11. We bundled up, put our Yaktrax over our shoes, and soaked up some very welcome sunshine. I will think differently by March, but right now, I still like the Midwest in the winter!

Windy and cold in eastern PA. We’ve definitely been spared the frigid negative temperatures and wind chills and abundance of snow so many people are dealing with. Next predicted storm is Tuesday…current forecast 2+ inches.

On thursday I had some surgery and was resting on the couch. Knock at the door that my brother’s (lives across the street) dogs had escaped. Found the hole in the fence, neighbor helped plug it up (or so we thought) and back to couch. Not 10 minutes later call from brother that another neighbor had found the bad girls out again. Took them to my house and called my daugther’s boyfriend to help me. He came, plugged up hole again. Two hours later…out again. Daughter took those bad girls to their house.

Brought them back to my house today as brother is returning tonight. He said it is the same hole in the fence for all 3 escapes. I don’t know how my brother will fix it with 3 or so inches of snow and more expected tomorrow, with high temp of about 0 as the ground is frozen solid now. I won’t be helping!

Sounds like it’s time for a kennel.

Temps this week won’t go above freezing with all nights in the teens. But hey…it’s January…it’s winter!

How were they outside of your brother wasn’t home - or someone to just put them in the house??

They have a doggie door to let themselves in and out and usually do a good job of it. It was starting to get cold on Thurs so I guess they just decided to explore the neighborhood. They are pretty large dogs so need a fairly sizable hole to get through the fence (we had another dog who only needed about one slat out of the fence but these bruts need 3 or more). After the first escape I just put them back in the house, thinking they wouldn’t get out again, but no, they knocked the stuff we put in the hole out of the way (a table, a cone, the slats, and a couple of rocks). The neighbor doesn’t have a fence in the front of his driveway so once they are in the neighbor’s yard, off they go. Bad dogs.

Now they are sleeping through the Packers game and won’t get dinner as I don’t have any dog food at this house and it is too cold to go across the street. They have to wait.

Our younger son made the drive back to school today, from MA to VA. He only encountered some snow on the Merritt Parkway.

In a pinch I will make my dogs rice with shredded chicken. We were supposed to have a dog food delivery on Friday, delayed until Sat and then delayed until today but looks like it is delayed again because of the weather.

And lest people think it’s never cold in Nashville….

We get a lot of winter storm watch without any snow. It has been over 2 years since we’ve had any measurable snow.

According to the weather app, it’s been snowing for at least 4 hours since I’ve been up. I haven’t seen a single flake, including during my 7 mile run outside. I think there will be a lot of disappointed kids hoping for schools to be closed tomorrow.

It’s really cold here, but we will survive. At least today is supposed to be sunny.

-2 actual temp at wake up. Might see another round of light snow overnight though we only have maybe an inch on the ground now. That and lots of ice

We were supposed to get a little snow tonight into tomorrow morning but apparently it has arrived earlier than predicted to most of the area. Except where I live. It’s always like a bubble around us looking at radar maps. It is flurrying here (DC/Balt area). I doubt we will get measurable snow (it’s been over two years since we’ve had measurable snow!).

D18 went back yesterday to Chicago for spring semester. Fortuitous planning when purchasing her flight a couple months ago (morning flight, two days b/f class starts). Her flight was on time, the afternoon flight delayed, evening flight and all flights today canceled. So many kids going back have canceled flights and trains! She was lucky to get back with no issues.

It was 50 degrees here when she left, -7 (wind chill are -25) when she got to Chicago. This is the first time she has experienced these kind of temps.

My granddaughter called to tell me that it was -7 in Indianapolis. I told her to tell her parents to move back to New England because it was much warmer at Grandma’s house (23) and the snow was gone!!

Currently it’s -10F (feels like -27F) in my Chicago suburb. The forecast doesn’t predict above zero temps until Wednesday. I know I’m fortunate I don’t have to spend a lot of time outside.

The interesting thing I find with the extreme weather is it has three positive consequences when it passes.

  • First, I’m always grateful for “the little things” I sometimes take for granted…like the car starting, the electricity staying on, food to eat, etc.
  • Second, I appreciate how it’s all relative. You tend to remind yourself, it could be worse. I know from previous experience that by next week when the temps climb to the “balmy” 30s, it’ll feel downright warm in comparison.
  • And lastly, it teaches me to prepare for “the next time”….lessons I hope my young adult children learn.

Yes, a few minutes ago it was 24 here in Maine and 19 in Austin! And they had a little frozen precipitation overnight. My BFF’s partner said it took an hour and a half to get to work, and it’s usually a quick drive.

That is too funny. My daughter just moved recently to Austin to get better weather. It is warmer here than there. I am going to have to give her a hard time.

Finally snowing in SW VA. Supposed to snow all day but only accumulate 1-3 inches? Temps at just about 32 all day and night with little wind. Will get much colder and windier tomorrow once the cloud cover decreases.
