H contacted the plow company & politely insisted that they come back through. When he got here, the driver agreed that they should have plowed closer to the curb - he said it was really hard to see last night, which is true. But he should have come back through in daylight to make sure that everything was okay. H still had to shovel the stuff across the bottom of the driveway, but at least it was 11’ closer to the curb after the re-plow & the street itself is clear now.
We haven’t started clearing branches. The birds are happily playing in them, so no hurry.
We didn’t get rain, but it got warm during the night (not now!), and the snow is extremely heavy. H was glad that he did the driveway last night. Although there was more snow, it wasn’t as heavy as it would have been had he waited until this morning. It’s bitter cold and will be for the foreseeable future, but I think that only flurries are predicted for now.
16 degrees. 28 mph winds with 50 mph gusts. Snow. I hate it. We lived in Kansas for 15 years and this is so much like a Kansas storm. Except for all the big trees that are falling everywhere. One for the record books.
And today the cold sits in. I’m sure others will “beat” this temperature but it’s currently 3 degrees, feels like -22 with wind chill. No pup walks happening this morning!
Yeah I took the dog out - we also got maybe 1/2 inch of snow - takes no time for their paws to freeze up - freaks me out when he starts limping! And we were only out 2-3 mins! He needs to be faster at peeing!
I put Musher’s Secret on his paw before he goes out. It helps a lot. I tried booties too but he won’t let me put them on (he’s a grumpy old guy now ; )).
He speed pottied this morning - I think he was in/out in 30 seconds.
I’ve never heard of that! I just looked it up. Do you put a small amount? Does it get on your floors - or do you wipe off any excess when pup comes inside??
Yes, just a small amount. I’ve never had any issue with it getting on my hardwoods. I think it’s absorbed pretty quickly by the dog’s pads. It’s like chapstick…but for paws ; )
A small town near us has a winter fest every winter. Ice sculptures and all. At least a couple of the last few years some of the events have been cancelled because it’s been too warm. The whole event had to be cancelled yesterday because, well, WINTER! The cold temps and high winds could have spelled disaster if they tried to have it. Can’t win sometimes!
Roof is leaking, no doubt due to ice dams which I diligently tried to prevent using my trusty roof rake. Outside temp is -13 F. Next time it will be above zero is Tuesday. Inserting airpods with noise cancellation now so I don’t have to hear the dripping from the kitchen ceiling.
Only 18 degrees here this morning. We got a message from our power company to conserve energy last night. Turned the thermostat down to 60 degrees, set laundry aside, and went to bed. Did not turn off the heat lamps at the hummer feeders though. Hummers stated their days with a breakfast of syrup and are perky and feisty! Having aerial fights Top Gun-style. So much energy wasted on chasing each other away from the feeders.
I saw the temp this morning in our old Chicagoland suburb was -8, not expected to reach 0. Winter weather like this is what started my quest 18 years ago to move away from extremes. During the 25 years we lived in that suburb, temperatures ranged from -26 to +108. I don’t think I’ll ever miss cold and snow - or roof ice dams causing leaks (every winter, it seemed) and frozen pipes bursting in the spring (including one year a pipe we hadn’t even know existed) and taking my life in my hands to get the paper from the foot of our steep driveway apron.
