Also, I have found that the dorms in meyers are far larger than anything any of my friends going to southern schools will be living in. Anyone that lived in meyers or towers(since the rooms are so similar in size) have any need to bring extra furniture or lighting? I am going in blind and would love any advice. extra chairs or floor lamps?

I found that extra lamps, esp. a 3-way floor lamp was a good idea. The overhead lighting gets to you after a while. Not sure about extra furniture b/c I was in a suite. How about a comfortable desk chair? The ones we had were metal and really uncomfortable.

Are you planning on cooking? I think you’ll need to allocate at least $10 a day for food, so $300-600 depending on how often you eat out/what kind of places you go to.

I’d say around $600 for rent. If you share an apartment, and depending on location, you can get a cheaper room. I know some people who share rooms, bringing down the cost even more.

My heating is electricity-based, and my monthly bill is around $50, but can skyrocket to $120 during winter months. My landlord takes care of water and trash disposal, but that will depend so just ask when you visit apartments. Internet will be around $30-50 a month, if you have more people in your apartment you can split this.

Phone… Most people I know just use their cellphones, but I’m sure you can get a landline along with Internet for pretty cheap. Otherwise you can look into VoIP solutions :)

To recap: $600 rent, ~$450 food, ~$80 utilities (winter is long), $30 internet= $1160. If you live in Center City you’ll also need to account for transportation, and I think the price of those tokens just went up.

I’m been accepted as a freshman student for the 2010-11 year, and I’m in Westphal for Design & Merchandising. I was contacted in August before my senior year of high school with Drexel’s VIP application and so I received my admission and scholarship offers by October of that year. I’m also enrolled in the 4-year 1 co-op cycle program.

From what I’ve heard from other students and even administrators, freshman housing is extremely overbooked. Towers was my first choice, but now every room is a triple. I’ve been placed in Kelly, my third choice, with one other roommate. My brother, also a freshman, is even in a converted lounge area in Myers with three other students. The housing site states that these lounges are temporary but with a desk, dresser, and bed like every other room, and that they may be cleared out as early as October.

Do any upperclassmen have move-in day advice? Should I bring a cart or caddy for my boxes and bags or will they be supplied? I’m moving in early, on Sept. 15. And on a different note, is there a sort of janitorial closet on each floor with a communal vacuum and mop, or will we need to bring one of our own?

martin, thanks for the cost breakdown. I definitely plan on cooking- good intentions, but will budget for the cost of eating out occasionally.

Courtney, last year they had these large carts on wheels. Two trips w/ one of these carts did it. My family was able to pull up to the dorm/curbside and we had about 10-15 min. to unload everything. Race St. had a vacuum cleaner at the front desk that we could borrow when necessary- i also brought a dustbuster/small vacuum from home.

Does anyone know which bank is on or closest to Drexel’s main campus? Rather than having money sent from home, I’m interested in setting up an account there. It looks like that will be more convenient.

I’m going to be in the string ensemble, and I was wondering what precautions I should take with bringing my instrument (violin) to drexel? Will I be taking it back and forth to my dorm room or should I keep it in a locker in the performing arts building?

Hey, I’ll be taking computer science as a freshman this year. I was just wondering what you think of the overall year 1 course work, is it very difficult and how much work do you have to put in? Also, is it difficult to transfer out of Drexel after 1 year? Thanks for the help

Hey guys. Based on my research and school acceptance stats I figure I will get into Drexel. The concern I have is the tuition (as many students do).

Is anyone willing to share their net tuition cost? An approximation for a prospective student please. (I know this question is iffy)

Other than co-op money, what should I know in order to get an ample amount of financial aid?

Also, I know the Dean of this department at Drexel. I know his family and I’m friends with the Dean’s son. We go to the same church and so on. I don’t mean to sound arrogant but can this help my admission chances or financial aid?

Hey everyone! I love how informative this thread is, it really makes me extremely excited for college.
I have one doubt though, I was accepted for a 4 year architecture major and I realllllllly wanted to change for biomedical engineering major. How hard is it to change programs? I also plan on doing a 5 year 3 co-op if They let me change major.
Apparently Drexel is a very competitive engineering school and I am worried that with my stats the college just wont want to ‘take me in’… What do you suggest that I do?

How are the student services at Drexel? Are they easily accessible? Do they help you with finding out specific job opportunities for the Co-Op program? Or do you have to job search yourself?

Hey i applied for Drexel University Biomedical Engineering program and got ACCEPTED!
But did not recieve any merit scholarship but the family dragon scholarship - $3000 per year

If i fill out fafsa, what should i except?! GOOD AMOUNT!? FOR HELP?

also is biomed REALLY hard? and hard to maintian GPA?

How is physical training for AFROTC going to affect coops. Also, since Drexel operates on a quarterly basis, when are final exams and breaks? when will i start my next course? I already got accepted to the civil eng program and these questions are really bugging me.

@lueshi, I’m not sure about AFROTC and I don’t want to give you wrong info. Check the website? And what do you mean by start your next course? You take placements over the summer…?

Quarter system though…dates for 2010-2011, but it’s roughly the same.

Winter- January 3rd thru March 14th, exams until March 19th
Spring- March 28th thru June 6th, exams until June 10th
