If a person was rejected from UVA OOS (New York) Early action this year, does that mean it is like impossible to even think about getting into an Ivy (or a top 20)? If you can’t get into a top public like UVA, should I just give up hope on any Ivy admissions offers?

Thanks for any advice. Please reply, it would mean a lot. :)

My personal, unprofessional opinion: absolutely not. Every college is unique and looks for different aspects in an applicant. In addition, some application supplements or interviews with your Ivies may reveal certain highlights of an applicant that UVa may not have had the opportunity to see. Although it may be more of a reach to get into an Ivy, I definitely wouldn’t say it’s impossible. UVa was very selective OOS… doesn’t mean an Ivy won’t pick you up if they see something special.

OOS? OK I’m an international applicant…
From my perspective: Absolutely NOT! There is obviously no necessary connection between being admitted by UVa and by ivies… Just move on. The admission system which has been used for hundreds of years will not lose any good student.

Once you are applying to very selective universities, the admissions become very unpredictable. The best bet is to make sure you apply to a range of schools, and don’t let yourself become obsessed with any one school. You may find a college that you like much much more that is not on a top 20 or top 50 list. Different colleges are great at different things.

Each year, judging from this forum, there are plenty of students who are rejected by UVA but who get into top 20 schools.

Thanks everyone!! Your responses are very reassuring and helpful!! Also- Congrats to all who will be a part of UVA '16! :)
