Any of your son or daughter has "thin spot on eye's retina" problem?

My daughter is almost done with college. She went to have her eye check up mainly for prescription change. The doctor said she has thin spot on her retina. She is near sighted from 12 years old. Many of the web site saying it may caused by that.
Any of your son or daughter has this problem? She is in New York, should I find another doctor in New York to check out again? Any suggestion you have?

Thanks for any input.

MD here. What type of doctor was the first one? You should get an opinion from a retina specialist. If the first doctor was a retina specialist, then you could get a second opinion by another retina specialist if you so desire. Depending on what type of thinning it is,they might put some laser spots around it to “spot weld” it to prevent a retinal detachment in the future. Or they might just follow it.

Agree that you should go to a retina specialist, there are many. Assumedly if she only went to get her prescription changed, the first eye doctor was not a retina specialist. There is a lot of sophisticated equipment to use to define what her problem is and how bad it is.

For the most part, eye surgeries are quite painless and short.

Is this a new Dr?
He may have equipment previous Drs did not, and so the findings may reflect that.
Like when the hospital got a digital mammography machine & everyone had to come in & get rechecked.
Some thin spots are normal, its changes you want to be aware of.

Thanks for all your input!
She went to a place to check if she need new glasses. It is possible the lady who checked her eye is not an eye doctor.
I will encourage her to go to a retina specialist. Again, thanks for all your kind input.
