Any Questions about UCSD?

@Yell0w - I’ve also found KevinGoes2Kollege’s videos very helpful!

Which is exactly what someone from Revelle would say! Muahahahaha!!! I’m just kidding. Please don’t hurt me all-powerful astrina.

However, there is a best college.

So I went to apply for housing, and they just had me click one button and then they gave me a confirmation message, how do I select what type of room I want and all that? Did I do something wrong, or does that come out later?

pokes kings with a pointy stick

@snapebotherer - yep, later, along with roommate preferences and whatnot. you can start pondering it now and reading old discussions on CC. we’re an opinionated lot. :)

Is that “housing application” thing what determines our priority for singles/doubles and avoiding overflow housing? Because I submitted mine the night decisions came out.

How is UCSD’s terrain? Is it hilly?

I’m wondering if a bicycle would be useful. Are there lots of bike racks? I prefer cycling over walking.

It’s moderately hilly, especially if you’re walking east-west. But good news! It’s super-bikeable, and once I got one I couldn’t stop using it. There are bike racks everywhere. If yours looks like the generic sub-$200 Target version and it’s locked down securely among other bikes, it’ll be perfectly safe.

Look into the UCSD cycling team if you’re really into it – especially the annual Tour de Donuts.

Warren. But don’t tell the students from other colleges. It might hurt their feelings. ;)

Thanks astrina! I was worried that the terrain would be like UCSC which my brother tells me is inconvenient for cyclists.

And I’ll definitely check the team out, don’t know if I’m good enough to really compete though, :P

Just how is the civil/ environmental engineering program NOT impacted? I checked on the UCSD website…
I got admitted for physics (surprisingly, I only took honors physics last year…)
This may give me a leg up on transfering into engineering if I decide to try…but if civil engineering is not impacted for fall 2011, it shouldn’t be a problem changing majors right?

Also, how is ucsd for environmental studies?

Thanks so much, you guys have all been so helpful.

For intramural sports do you already have to play the sport, or can you just walk on if you’re willing to put the time in and all?

And when I go down to visit, what are some things I should check out after the tour?

@ snape:
You can choose which level of sport you want to play, they have different divisions for people who are serious and for people who aren’t. I am not athletic at all and I played flag football one quarter, just for the heck of it.

After the tour, go to the places you were most interested in. I personally recommend the Programs Abroad Office. Hehehe Otherwise, just walk around. Check out the library, and Price Center of course, because those are places we spend a lot of time at. Try to strike up a conversation with a friendly looking current student.

Ps–love the screen name

@hopefullyok

Thanks! Any particular things to do or see on or around campus? Like la jolla, sd, I’m going down all weekend and looking for stuff to do after the 90 min tour Friday morning haha

Around campus…La Jolla isn’t that exciting, but downtown San Diego can be fun. I personally like Balboa Park, they have museums, and its very pretty. Also, Extraordinary Desserts. Yummy!

Does warren have coed dorms?

Any ideas of who’s gonna be on the lineup for Sun God 2011?

how is the philosophy program at warren college? also, whats it like for transfers?

@nicktsui2293

There’s a process to change colleges, which if I recall requires you to apply to change at least after your first quarter or two, and you need to prove that switching will allow you to complete all of your requirements more quickly. (Someone correct me if I’m wrong, I’m going off the recollection of a friend who got into Revelle and tried to switch into Sixth a few years ago.)

Sixth College isn’t bad. The GE requirements are manageable, and the writing series is only 3 quarters. It’s a much lighter load than, say, Revelle or ERC, and comparable to Muir, Marshall, and Warren. The housing location IS out of the way, but it’s still like a 5 minute walk from the freshman housing to the center of campus and 10-15 to anywhere else except like the far reaches of ERC, but that’s what the shuttle is for.

My experience was that Sixth College was very flexible and laid back, and administration was great. Go in with an open mind. You might like it, and if not, you can always apply to transfer.

What’s the housing like at ECR?
