Facts: Hum’s not easy to get an A in. But most people are not very good writers. You have to take H1&2 at UCSD anyway, and you can take your pick of one fromH3/4/5 based on your schedule and interests.

Someone’s opinions of a writing class are essentially worthless, since s/he has a different background, different level of interest, different amount of motivation, different profs, different TAs, catch my drift?

Hi,clarkfobes. I have some questions to ask you. How is the bioengineering-bioinformatics in UCSD? Plus, I was admitted as a freshman major in it, but what I really want is bioenginnering-biotechnology. Is it possible to transfer to that major? Thank you.

Yeah, in that both classes are run seminar-style with everyone sitting in a circle and interpreting all the craziness out of everything. It’s more of a literature-discussion circle than actual writing instruction. The most writing-related learning came from your TA’s comments and only if you take the initiative to discuss them with him/her. Even then, the evaluation of your writing is entirely subjective. If you write in a manner similar to your TA, great. If not, tough.

Literature discussion/analysis are great, don’t get me wrong. I took a terrific elective class on Atomic Bomb Lit & Film that I’d highly recommend. But when the entirety of your hum grade rests on the opinions of an overwork and oft-disgruntled 6th-year PhD student who sees you and 10 of your classmates for two hours a week, chances are everyone is going to put in the minimum amount of work possible to earn their grade/paycheck. Not the best experience. My hum3 TA didn’t even learn my name until Week 7.

Since I will be an engineering major in Warren, I will need 2 area of studies as GE.
I know that you can have a minor instead of AS, can a math minor be used as my GE?
there is about 4 lower division course overlap with the engineering req.
thanks

hello everyone, i have just got accepted to UCSD and i had couple of questions, i have been really anxious about it this semester, so i have couple of W’s this semester but none major courses, would that mano W’s cause a trouble for me? and also, i did change some classes this semester but do i have to let them know as well? is that also going to be a problem? please get back at me. thanks

Both good to have, both have been teaching for a while (O’Connor’s been around longer). I like Ternansky’s humor better, but it’s not for everyone.

Some folks complain that Ternansky makes them think a little harder than the average professor (which I don’t think is a bad thing). What teaching methods? Ochem’s basically a lesson in independent study.

Ternansky’s teaching this quarter, why don’t you just go sit in on one of his classes?

Hey, can anyone post a link to the “finish in four” year plan I keep seeing posted about on these forums. I tried googling it and the website for thurgood marshall college was kinda confusing too…

Also, I’ll be Human Biology if that helps, Thanks!

This is a question about people that were waitlisted and already got in.

After I submitted my SIR, for housing it says we have to fill it out by may 1st but when I click on it, it says that the information will come out later since we’re waitlisters…does that mean we don’t do anything for housing for may 1st?? Do we have to do anything else other than the SIR?? Are we still going to get housing like everyone else?

Answer quiicckkkk, May 1st is tomorrow! thank you!!

I’ve heard that UCSD has a strong graduate program in econometrics, but how about its econ major at the undergraduate level comparing to UCLA & USC?

I am enrolled as freshman for fall’11. Plan to take Nano Engineering. The suggested courses for Nano Eng for fall term are -NANO 102, CENG 100, ECE 35. But there are pre requisites like Chem. 6C, Math. 20D, NANO 101. Again Chem. 6C pre requisite is Chem 6B. SImilarly for Math 20D you need 20C and it needs 20A and so on and so forth.

Does it mean that we cannot take Nano 102 before taking all the other courses. How does the system work?

I have 750 in my SAT Writing. Warren basic english requirement needs 680 or more in SAT II English. Aren’t both the same?

How can I clear the Math Placement Exam from India. Is there an online way to pass some of the basic requirements.

Are there any other core courses that I can pass even before I join UCSD in fall?

Hi, ive been admitted as a human bio major to erc. i just have a couple of questions:

im taking the ap calc ab exam on wednesday. ive gotten fours and fives on my practice exams, so im pretty sure that im going to pass. if i do pass, should i register for math10B or math 20B? ive heard that the math20 series is for science and math majors, but i also saw a list of majors that required math20 and human bio wasnt on it.

im going to have to take foreign language in erc, which isnt exactly my favorite, so ive decided to basically start over with a new language. how hard are the foreign language classes? i read that you have to take class five days a week and that its pretty intensive. would it be smart to start the classes my first year or wait until next year?

^the 20 series is required for the molbio and bioinformatics majors. it’s also not THAT hard. if you can wrangle a 5 on the AB exam, your math is strong enough to get an A in 20B with moderately little effort. (half of the 20B curriculum is covered in the AP exam, the other half involves learning how to integrate twice in one problem - not difficult)

re: foreign languages: did you not take ANY in high school? it is a lot of extra work to retake a language from the very beginning, and if the teacher senses that you’re overqualified for the class (ie, speaking perfect french in a beginner’s class), you can get asked to leave.
