Any religious high school kids

I have a friend who is kinda religious. He sometimes gets laughed at because of his religiousness. Are there any religious high school kids here? Do you often get laughed at and how do you deal with this problem?

haha, ppl at my school think it’s weird to not be religious…

… you can be smart and religious

But you can’t be open minded and religious. =]

^just flat out false.
open-minded doesn’t equal accepting every ideology as truth, it just means that you are willing to think through other beliefs
just saying. Ultimately, it is smart to be open-minded in the sense that you can either realize that what you believe makes the most sense, or that another worldview makes more sense.

I get **** cause i’m Jewish…just little jokes here and there
it was a lot worse last year

I’m not religious myself but I go to a high school affiliated with a particular religion.

It’s a mixed blessing. Kids are held to higher standards with behavior (at least compared to your typical public hs) and grades, but the religion gets in the way of the education and you have to deal with Bible thumping lemmings all the time.

Yes, most religious students (ultra-conservative christians) at my school are thought of as ridiculous and dogmatic, which, considering the people in question, isn’t very off base. I personally am a moderate/reformed jew, and I have found that as long as you’re open with your religion and are open minded and accepting of other beliefs, most people really don’t care too much. There are some snide jokes and comments occasionally, but the people who make these are ignorant jerks who really aren’t worth getting offended over. I think the best advice I can give is for him to be open-minded, not to incorporate the bible into everyday conversation, and try not to let any of it bother him.

I’m an Evangelical Christian. I’m also #2 in my class.

Please be respectful towards people with a religion. EVERYONE has a moral foundation, even if it’s just the Golden Rule or a basic respect for human dignity. Sure, I may follow the Bible, but I’m still willing to consider whether my views are based on the correct interpretations. That’s what I’ve learned through debate, and my ultra-conservative positions have shifted to libertarian ones (which, historically, was the political mindset of the Calvinists, which I am).

I guess I could be considered religious. I don’t get laughed at though because a lot of my peers also attend church and could be considered religious. I’m sorry about your friend though :/

I don’t know why people think that being open-minded means agreeing with everyone else.

I’m a Christian, I accept all viewpoints but I’m not going to conform or change what I believe in just because everyone else believes (or doesn’t believe) in something else. I don’t get made fun of, but I get pressured. People give me a hard time because I don’t drink or smoke if they don’t know me. But my friends are pretty accepting.

Can someone please tell me what’s not open-minded about me?
My brother’s gay for God’s sake. And I still love him regardless.

there is like one. She gets heckled every once in a while but its more or less her fault anyway. ~_~

Clearly you’re not open-minded.

Maybe hilsa was being facetious? Just a thought…

Wow. People really can’t take my humour on this forum.

This is like the fifth time in a few days I’ve been called out for saying something seemingly offensive when I’m only joking.

ararararar.

yea the religious people in my school all hang out together. kinda like their own little clique. as for me i’m agnostic, my mom’s kinda psycho though so she makes me go to church every sunday, my parents are uber conservative Catholics.

hahah hilsa it’s so hard to detect sarcasm on the internet! haha

I thought the “=]” made it clear that the irony was intentional.

Yeah, I’m a little slow. Probably shouldn’t be on this site cuz I’m not ivy material whatsoever.

I go to a Catholic School.
