Any Russia Travel Experts?

Hi-

I posted over at Parent Cafe and they suggested I ask here too.

Any students familiar with that area?

Thanks!

Marilyn, no wonder that you can’t find anything about hotel Kamea; you need to search google in Russian and still you won’t find much.

I found only one picture of this hotel and no information about it. http://www.kamensk-uralskiy.ru/win/foto/bk34/nm1/10/pg1/</a></p>

I also found e-mail (although I’m not 100% sure it is the right one, but you can try) kamea-ku@mail.ru

I think he would be lost without knowing Russian. There are not many people who speak English. Last summer I worked in restaurant, if not me all Americans would probably stay hungry, since nobody (out of 30 people who worked there) could really understand or speak English. I would really suggest hiring and interpretor.

“hiring an interpretor”

Thanks - there will be an interpreter at the factory he’s visiting and the owners speak a little English - he’s more concerned with after work. Sounds like he should just bring a list of Russian words and translations so he can order in a restaurant.

One of the parents sent me the photo link - I had tried Translate Google on that web site but wasn’t able to identify it.

Well, words and translations can help, but I wrote example of restaurant just to give an idea that there won’t be many things for him to do without knowing language.

I think it didn’t identify link because you see in your browser not Russian language, but just some symbols (something like this "

I found a web site that’s got pages of words in Cyrillic, transliteration, and translation. At least he can look at a menu and find the symbols!

Google Translate http://www.google.com/translate_t</a> does translate into and out of Cyrillic - kind of fun!

Let’s see if these come out OK:

ресторан - restaurant

Приятного аппетита! - Bon Appetit!

Perhaps the problem you are having with Translate Google is that Камея does not properly translate to Kamea. It is a play on words, but the literal English translation is Cameo.

If you would like to search in Russian, you can put Камея and “Каменск-Уральский” (Kamensk Uralsky) and see if Google will translate anything for you. I have had a quick look, but most of the early results are just business directories.

I would recommend learning at least basic phrases in russian, as well as reading Cyrillic alphabet, it’s not very hard, but it may help to recognize some similiar words, like restaurant, toilet(a European equivalent of “bathroom”).
I’ve read a couple of news threads on several russian forums, it seems like a good hotel, pretty new,one of the best in the city, here’s the phone number,
+7(343) 325530 (I hope they speak English there…)
+7(343) 322090
+7(343) 322050

Here’s the map to the hotel
http://info-torg.ru/about</a>
and finally here’s the link to the official website(in Russian, but they have lots of pictures)
http://info-torg.ru/home/kamea/</a>
On its official website it says that the interior design of the hotel resembles the region’s(it’s called Ural region) culture, there are 22 suites, each suit has a bathroom, some kind of internet connection(I guess it’s wi-fi,i’m not sure though), cabel tv, phone, and a mini-bar. There’s also a restaurant (or a caffee) and they offer exquisite traditional Russian cuisine(wow!) with “nice music and charming atmosphere…” (way to go!!!)This place is open from 12pm, it also says that “a european breakfest is included”, so I suppose there’s a way to get full before noon.
There’s also a safe available for extra charge(apparently somewhere in the hotel, I guess outside of a suite), sauna and “a room with a Russian pool (“billiard”)and fireplace”(for extra charge).
They accept cash and credit cards.
I hope it’s enough information.Have a great time in Russia!!!When is he going there?
P.S.
Here’s the map of two districts of the city, maybe you’ll need it:
http://www.k-uralsk.ru/k-uralsk.ru/info/map</a></p>

(Sinarskiy and Krasnogorskiy districts; however you still need to know how to read the alphabet:(

Hazarrrd, thank you so much! I’m very grateful for the trouble you took. This is comforting information - I know he was concerned about the hotel but this sounds relatively decent, all things considered.

He has been researching some Russian and has an old friend who emigrated 25 years ago who sent materials.

He’s leaving in a couple of days and will be gone for 10 days.

Now what souvenirs should I ask for?! I’m guessing he’ll have to shop in Ekatrinburg - so far I’ve thought of cat nesting dolls and a replica Faberge easter egg (although he has no idea what that is). Maybe the one with the Imperial coach …

CC is the best!

OK, so my husband arrived safely (although the checked bag is taking another day to arrive) but they have now switched him to the Hotel Mirage, slightly nicer, outside of town, and closer to the factory. Any links?

Thanks!
