Any suggestions for new parents of twins?

Thank you again for all the kind words, advice, and wonderful sharing of experiences. It’s been delightful and comforting to read them.

Apparently last night was okay. One twin was a champ and slept from 12:30-4:30 and then until 8:30. The other, however, apparently did NOT sleep…seemed to be having some tummy distress. The great news, though, is that my DIL got some kind of nipple shields and now breast feeding has become something she does not dread. No more pain!! I have to think that will help with all the things…

Thanks again, guys. I know they will get through this!

Great news!

Also late to the party, and I didn’t have twins. But S1 was born six weeks early. During the first few months, I despaired that the rest of my life would be spent in a darkened room nursing him. Lots of crying and craziness (me, not him).

Congratulations! What a wonderful event!!

Also, they just posted ADORABLE photos of themselves with the babies as they modeled adorable headbands with bows that were made by friends at a baby shower. They looked so, so happy which is awesome. Man I wish I could share them with you all! Just imagine the cutest thing you ever have seen and there it is. I am impartial, of course!

I’m sorry, churchmusicmom, that cannot be, because MY twins were the most adorable things in the world  Glad to hear everyone is doing well, and congrats again.

Well, then, Pizzagirl, just imagine your twins. You get the idea!
And thanks.

Quick update on the babies: one twin (the smaller one who had breathing issues while in NICU) was admitted to the children’s hospital over the weekend because she was not eating and they couldn’t get her to wake up to even try to eat. While in the ER (Friday night), she quickly demonstrated that she had diarrhea (sorry, guys, but it’s a baby)…they suspect enterovirus—probably contracted at the pediatrician’s office. Admitted her to get IV fluids and her mom stayed with her to nurse her until they were discharged today. I stayed at their house with the other baby (dad bounced back and forth between home and hospital), and mom had put up some frozen breast milk and also continued trying to pump while in the hospital and that was brought to us as well. We also supplemented some with formula. Miraculously, twin 2 has not developed the illness and we are praying that stays the case. Both babies are home now and doing well, but it was a crazy weekend. I surely do hope mom and dad get a break tonight!

thankfully, nursing is going MUCH better for mom and for babies now. I feel confident that things will get very much better from here…

Sorry to hear that! I’m glad the little one has recovered and that both twins are now doing well. I’d guess that the smaller one probably also has a somewhat weaker immune system overall – hopefully that will change over time as the baby grows. I’m glad to know that the other twin also takes the formula supplementation well – in the long run it makes things a lot easier, particularly for circumstances like this where the mom really couldn’t be two places at once.

Congratulations, Churchmusicmom! Lucky you! I am sending good thoughts and prayers for your S, DIL, and the babies.

I am so pleased that the little one is better and that things are now going well. Best wishes.

They are blessed to have you, @churchmusicmom!

Our pediatrician had a lactation consultant on staff. She was my lifeline for awhile.

I found it very interesting how something so natural and ingrained into our DNA as breast feeding quite simply doesn’t seem to come natural at all! I know very few moms who didn’t experience a good deal of pain or problems or frustration with breastfeeding at the outset. Of course, most will work through them, but it surprised me that it didn’t come easier!

Thanks, everyone.

Great update.

Hey, everyone! I just thought I’d give you all an update since you were so kind and so helpful early on…

The twins are thriving and doing great! Generally they wake up ONE TIME around 1 or 2 to feed and usually one of them has to be awakened for this. So we are hoping that one day they BOTH just sleep through it. They then wake up again around 5 or 6 and then sleep till 8 or so. Mom and dad are doing well with this and have not needed me to relieve them over night in a couple of weeks.

They weigh around 8 1/2 and 9 pounds and are looking all filled-out and healthy. They smile a LOT, which is just delightful. We took them to the mall and it’s a whole lot of fun to just walk around and listen to people’s comments about them.

Mom starts back to work (part time) next week, so my gig as nanny starts in force. It will be interesting. Juggling two babies is fun!

Glad to hear the good news! You’ll have your arms full with that juggling but the rewards will be enormous - for the lucky babies too.

That’s great news!

Aww…what precious times. The mini celebrity aspect of baby twins in public can be fun. Best wishes with the solo grandma time!

Yay!

When my twins were a few years old (past the baby stage), I was on a business trip and went shopping and happened to see a woman who had infant twins. So I kind of smugly went over to her, and did the whole “I have twins too, and it gets better,” trying to be encouraging. She said yes I know - this is my second set of twins! Oops! And I thought I was doing such a favor!

Great news, churchmusicmom! There was a recent article that said that grandparents who babysit their grandchildren regularly have a lower risk of alzheimers. Enjoy the time with them!
