I’ve been fascinated by them for a long time. Costco had them yesterday at a good price, and I bit. I am so disappointed that it refuses to charge correctly–I will have to take it back. So the question is: did I just get a bad break on this one? Or are they so delicate or unreliable that I should return, not exchange, it?

I like mine. It doesn’t have a recharging problem.

I have pets, so I like the fact that it picks up a lot of fur. I still have to use the “real vacuum” for general cleaning, but the roomba is great for that daily fur removal.

I have three. They all charge just fine. Take it back and get another one.

You do have to charge them for 24 hours before the first time you use it though.

Will it go from rugs to floor and back again?

"Will it go from rugs to floor and back again? ": Yes…
Sorry you got a defective one.
I have three different roombas and I’m very satisfied… the oldest roomba for more than a year and have no problems. The service of this company is very good.
Go and change it… you will love your roomba!

I didn’t like my roomba.

Maybe it’s just me, but I never really was able to relax and just let it do its thing. If I left the room to do something else, I would invariably come back to find it stuck in a corner or on the edge of a rug or something. And it didn’t really seem to clean the floors that well.

After mine died, I never bought a second one.

My brother, a fastidious neat freak and doctoral candidate in electrical engineering, bought a Roomba and adores it. He allows it to run whenever he’s in the lab. He says it doesn’t clean as well a regular vacuum, but it what it lacks in power, it makes up for with repetition and frequency. His floors stay just as clean as they used to, and he doesn’t have to do anything aside from patting the Roomba on its little robot head every now and then, just to let it know that it’s loved. He does, however, live alone, with no messy spouses or shedding animals.

Myself, a fastidious neat freak and structural engineer who doesn’t really believe in electrons and thinks that if there’s not enough horsepower in a vacuum to freak out the cats then it’s not really worth the money, I have a Dyson Animal that I begged my family to help me buy in lieu of Christmas and birthday presents a few years ago, and I would not trade it for the world. The thing will actually pull up our cheaply-tacked apartment carpeting if I keep it in a corner for too long. It’s easy to empty, it eats all the carpet-fur left behind by our two cats, and it has a HEPA filter in it, which helps my allergies. My Dyson’s name is Clive. Clive is purple. I love Clive. My husband has yet to be completely convinced that I love him more than I love Clive.

My brother and I have debated the respective merits of our vacuum choices, and have decided that for a petless, neat-freak, constantly-gone bachelor-type who just needs to keep the dust down, a Roomba is a good choice. For a married woman with a husband who eats crackers without a plate, who has two cats, and whose family typically generates a lot of dust and dander that settles on all surfaces (windowsills, ceiling fan blades, crown molding, baseboards, shelves, upholstery, and carpet in particular), something significantly more industrial is required.

I do love Clive…

Search this forum - there was a very active roomba thread a while back.

Meanwhile my beloved Rosie is still sitting under my desk while I decide if I should buy a $100 battery replacement. … She did so well until she began to get lost under the couch and now we have new rugs… should I gamble on a new lease on life?

When new, it had no ploblem bumping up from tile to hardwood an onto smooth rugs, ignoring fringe, etc.
As the years (we’re talking 2) went on, things began to bother her.

Should I get a new battery, or just a new Roomba?

I love my Roomba - no problems here. I just set the button (too lazy to set up the docking station and programming) and let it zip around. It gets all the nooks and crannies in my kitchen, too!

I like my Roomba when I use it, but I don’t use it as often as I should. For me it is too much hassle to dig and cut the dog hair out of the brushes. (I have 3 shedding dogs). It works fine around the kitchen chairs, but gets stuck under the bar stools so I have to move them around. I use the little sensor machine that signals the “do not cross this invisible line”

aibarr, That is the most entertaining thing I’ve ever read about vacuums! Thank you for sharing it. When my son was a toddler I got a Phantom Fury (I think that’s how it was spelled) and I loved it. We would watch the instructional video together. Soon my son would take the vacuum, stand in front of the tv and do the entire 20 minute patter from memory. It was both hilarious and sweet beyond words. My baby geek!

The one chore everyone in my sister’s house hates is mopping the floors. Anyone have experience with the scuubas?

For anyone who has not already seen it, a place to buy outfits for your roomba, [myRoomBud RoomBud iRobot Roomba costumes](http://www.myroombud.com/)

If I ever get a roomba, I’m going to knit it a outfit. My husband finds that disturbing.

Thanks, everybody. I am going to try an exchange and see how it goes. I have a big, powerful HEPA vaccum (although it’s not an animal :>)) that I fail to use frequently enough. Even if the Roomba only partly cleaned up the “public” areas (ie, the living room and entryway) in between my too infrequent cleaning sessions, it would make me happy. I have cats and a dog, thanks to whom I have awesome dust bunnies if I don’t keep up.

Oh, and when I say it won’t charge, whenever I plug it in to charge, it says “charging error # 6” (overheated battery), then I unplug it and ittells me to charge my roomba. Very frustrating.

My S bought himself a Roomba for his apartment, after seeing it do its magic in our household for several years. He’s an EE & has it scheduled to regularly do its rounds. It has been great for helping keep his allergies under good control (dust mites & dust are among his allergies). I know he values it because he purchased it with his own money! When he comes home for a visit, the first thing he does is run the roomba in his room.

It’s not PERFECT, but it really does get a lot of dust, especially off of our hardwood floors. We have had three or four different models now and have been quite happy with it. We have other family members & friends who have also gotten roombas. One family was so thrilled they now have 3 which the run regularly. The other is not happy with theirs and returned it to Costco. My friend was amazed that she thought she had gone a great job of vacuuming until she ran her roomba & was shocked at how much more it picked up afterwards!

I personally love it because it gets under furniture without having to move it around. It also doesn’t blow up a huge cloud of dust and set off our allergies the way vacuums do. I run it several times/week, whenever I remember & it works well for us.

MY s has had one since soph yr (I think) of college. He LOVES it!

Have never received the message…#6. Go and return it…but if you want to call the company their number is 1-800-727-9077. Good luck!

I have cats, and the Roomba wouldn’t finish a full sweep without the brush getting tangled and needing cleaning. And the Roomba was extremely loud. And probably would have gotten stuck if we weren’t there, as we would rescue it when we were there. I finally gave it to my boyfriend. When we broke up I reclaimed lots of things, including a pasta pot. I purposely did not reclaim the Roomba. He’s stuck with it now.

I LOVE my roomba! I think it is best on the limestone bathroom floors! With two daughters with long dark hair it is the best thing ever! We just start it up, close the door and all the hair is miraculously gone! Now if we could just find something to get the hair clogs out of the sink and shower! ;)

The one we have at home works fine. It’s probably a lemon.

Btw. Roomba=the best. Invention. EVER. The engineer at iRobot that designed it should get a Nobel Prize or something.

It doesn’t just clean, it also entertains endlessly.

After about 5 or 6 months our battery would only hold a charge for about 10 minutes. The same thing happened with my mom’s roomba - different model. When it worked, I loved it. I need to get a new battery.

It was entertaining while it lasted. Our dog would just sit and watch the roomba, so we put a dog treat on top of it. Then he followed the roomba all over the place but wasn’t brave enough to try and get the treat off the top. When the roomba beeped to signal it was done, the dog POUNCED on the treat. He adored that beep noise. Yes, I need a life!
