Side question-- I hear some people pronounce it Coach - ella, and others pronounce it Coa- chella. Is there a right and wrong pronunciation?
Beats me. It’s probably a California desert indian term. Jack White’s set was terrific. What a wild man. In one song introduction, he quote Captain Beefhart, Salvador Dali, Merle Haggard, Maya Angelou, and Jimmy Carter.
Happy day! I’m so glad that Jordan won. What a neat kid. I looked it up - he won $1.8 million today! Did you hear the commentator? He said, “If Jordan hadn’t left Texas, he’d be graduating next month. Instead, he left and got a master’s!”
The kid has ice water in his veins with the putter. He’s obviously a natural on those greens. Very impressive 4 day performance.
He now has two wins and two seconds in his last four tournaments. Quite a little hot streak. Today went pretty much as I expected. I thought he’d keep a comfortable lead and close it out.
He’s an awesome golfer and seems like a great young man. I read about his foundation, the “Jordan Spieth Charitable Trust, which focuses on special needs youth, military families, and junior golf. It’s inspired by his younger sister, Ellie, who has autism.” http://www.back9network.com/article/9-reasons-why-jordan-spieth-is-coolest-21-year-old-ever/ Very cool!
Thrilled that he won! Class act.
Great to see Phil, Rory and others play well too!
1.8 million. Not bad for four days’ work, is it? Looking forward to more great golf from this kid!
CPA who follows sports indicated that after taxes and expenses, he’s walking out with ~$850k. I’d still take it…
Career earnings go up astronomically with a Masters win. It’s way more than the prize money by itself.
^definitely. Just to start with, his endorsement deal with UnderArmour was just renewed for 10 years–and rumored to be worth $200M…and his contract with Rolex requires him to wear a Rolex any time he’s not on the course. And right now, he’s in first place in FedEx cup points…which is a $10 million payout to the winner at end of season…
One of the mistakes some Masters winners make is letting the easy money become a distraction. It’s pretty tempting to go play a corporate outing in Abu Dhabi for $250,000 and take your eye off the big picture (more majors). That’s more of a problem for the one-hit wonders. Spieth doesn’t strike me as a guy who is managing his career as if this will be his only big win.
I still can’t quite get over how dominant he has played in his first two Masters, starting at age 20. Don’t forget that he was tied for the lead and playing in the final group with Bubba Watson last year in his first Masters. He ended up getting beat by Bubba (who played a great round), but Spieth certainly didn’t wilt. He shot a respectable 72 in the final pair. He showed that was no fluke leading wire to wire this year.
Bubba’s watch deal requires him to wear his $500,000 watch while playing:

But, I suspect that Spieth’s Rolex deal will put more cash in his pocket.
@MaineLonghorn, UT lit the tower orange for Jordan’s win last night … and there was a “special guest” in the picture. ![]()

@cgpm59, thanks for posting that link! So cool. Two classy guys, for sure.
As a bit of trivia, Jordan graduated from the same rigorous Catholic HS as one of the ex-OU racist frat boys. Jesuit can hold its head high again!
“UT lit the tower orange for Jordan’s win last night … and there was a “special guest” in the picture.”
So cool! That gave me goosebumps. =)
Missypie - I thought Dallas Jesuit sounded familiar!
Good on Jordan - very happy for him. I really thought the pressure of the final Sunday would get to him but he proved me wrong.
So glad my three least favorite players couldn’t catch him.
Here’s a Golf Digest article on Spieth’s earnings
http://www.golfdigest.com/blogs/the-loop/2015/04/heres-how-much-money-jordan-sp.html
He made an estimated $12 million last year, split equally between prize money and endorsements.
The article estimated that Spieth’s endorsement income will rise to at least $20 million a year with his Masters’s win. He’s already won $5 million in prize money since January, so he’ll be in the $25 million a year category.
I think that’s low. Endorsement money depends on the attractiveness and marketability of the player. A well spoken, good looking, 21 year old Masters champion from Texas pushes some serious marketing “Q-factor” buttons. Plus he’s coming along at a time when the sport desperately needs some young guns. Plus, the Masters is the tournament to win from the standpoint of endorsement earnings.
Sorry to see he has a girlfriend. Thought he’d be perfect for my daughter. Either one.
He seems like a fine young man. I have been really impressed not only with his golf game but also how he expressed himself in interviews, how touching it was at the event in Texas last week to see him with his sister, how respectful he is of the history and the game and the great players who have come before him. I think we have the makings of the new Tiger in terms of his golf skill and potential and I am looking forward to seeing lots of Jordan vs. Rory pairings ahead of us. Always liked Phil a lot… always like Sergio too even though he has never actually made it to take one of the majors.
