I’m just wondering… What are/were your reasons for doing so? If you already did, are happy with the choice?

My son transferred “down.” He went from a tier 1 private university to a small state school with a much lower ranking. His reasons were being closer to home, having a more down to earth student body and getting the chance to experience a different college for undergrad. While it was a big adjustment, he is happy he made the decision to transfer.

Isn’t such a action irrational and illogical in it’s essence? I considered it, as I got really homesick here at Michigan, but luckily for me I don’t base my decisions on sentiments but rather reason-- because that is my state of nature!

Sorry guys 30hrs without sleep and Locke will make you write silly post. But seriously, toughen up and hang in there.

Cases I know of:

Large public U to Community College - money

Large public U to Community College - grades (flunked out of U)

Highly selective LAC to home-state U - money

Highly selective private LAC to home-state U - unsure about academic goals

Tier 1 private U to home-state U - didn’t like the crowd at the first place

Someone transferred from UPenn (ivy) –> WashU (non-ivy).

i’m transferring from penn to a non-ivy, but i don’t consider it transferring down

I don’t know for sure yet, but I may be transferring from an extremely prestigious liberal arts college to a state university. i have a lot of reasons: my school is way too expensive. i moved across the country to go here, but generally dislike the los angeles area and hate that i am ridiculously far from my family, home, and any sort of legitimate city. my school is way too small, there’s no way to get off campus without a car, and social life is extremely limited. my classes have been kind of disappointing. i don’t “fit” here. i could provide more reasons, but i think you get the gist. i realize i am transferring to somewhere much less prestigious and well-known, but coming here for a year has really put things into perspective and make me realize that prestige is worthless since i’ll be fine wherever i go anyway.

^^
You’re very smart for realizing that. I admire you. I am just figuring this out for myself :)

I’m considering dong such a transfer, for none of the reason listed above.
Location, size, money, are all non-issue

What IS an issue, is the student desire to succeed (read: get rich). Kids at Penn State are fun no doubt, but they honestly don’t give a **** about their future. And the few that do, well, there’s very few. Most people here would be happy making 100k the rest of their lives. Me? Not so.

Granted, PSU’s business program is ranked like #20 in the UGrad business rankings, it just doesnt seem like it after coming here. Rankings, after all, are pretty unreliable. Successful people aren’t where they are because of the college they went to, but of who they are. Being surrounded by these driven individuals (and not the ones that get drunk every night) definitely helps and is so much better networking.

I’m thinking about transferring to Baruch College. I know its ranked lower, and less well known. But after talking to a friend who goes there, and realizing what kind of people go to Baruch (look at its alumni, easily 3x the amount of CEOS vs PSU), it might be “better” school realistically.

Any thoughts on this?

if i don’t get in anywhere else (ucla, cal, nyu or columbia) i’ll probably be going to ucsb FROM vanderbilt. and honestly, i don’t care and it makes me feel happy to know i’ll be going somewhere else that is a better fit :)

quirky are you in the said situation yourself?

i know someone who transferred from cornell to a state school because they didn’t feel like they could handle the workload.

it definitely happens.

Does it matter if its a big name school, Tier 1 school or anything? The only thing that matters if you are happy at ur current school. I am currently not happy with my school and I just got accepted to a school I know I will be happy at :)!!! What matters is that you should enjoy college! Make sure the College you choose fits your personality!! I hate when people choose a school because of it’s big name or ranking. To me it makes no sense. So search around and visit college campuses to find the right one for you :)!
