I liked how Kristina initiated the date to reconnect with Adam, like to see their strengths in dealing with difficulties. I liked how Amber recognized that the relationship was dysfunctional and like her mother’s with her father, but what did Amber mean, take a break? would have liked for her to encourage him to seek out help and for him to actually do that. with military suicides being what they are it was a great opportunity to show soldiers how strong they can be seeking help, and how it can possibly preserve a relationship they really want.

Was Kristina drinking at the beginning of the episode with the sisters/sisters-in-law? Is that permitted on chemo? Also, based on the previous portrayal of Renee, wouldn’t you think this was a woman with some savings? I guess they needed to do a 180 and give her big time debts to further the upcoming story for Crosby & Jasmine. Sarah gets more annoying every episode. This was probably my least favorite episode this season.

If they can’t make a person look believably bald, they should just not try. Christina looked like a Conehead from Remulak. She also looked ridiculous in the red wig and weirdly unflattering dress for the date. She must have cringed when she saw how they dressed her for that.

Yeah, not my favorite episode. I can’t imagine surprising anyone with a shaved head when they are sleeping. I think it’s interesting how loosely the writers play with the money aspect sometimes. Crosby and Jasmine can afford $5,000 and getting a limo for the night and staying in an obviously very expensive hotel is no big deal.

I agree with comments above: the bald cap was not believable and neither was the money stuff. However, I appreciate the writing regarding Adam/Christina and how the treatment is affecting their relationship. I feel terrible for Sydney so I must think that story line is well written and acted! Sarah is ridiculous. Not digging the previews re: pregnancy story coming. I would rather focus on Crosby MIL and Julia/Joel plots.

I was somewhat disappointed in the episode as well. Maybe that is why they put it on New Years Day. The conehead was not believable, but I think the message was good. I was surprised that Haddie was not around. Sarah is an idiot, but for some odd reason I like Hank. The previews looked good. I am OK with the pregnancy story line because since I watch with my 17 year old son, it is a good starting point for some talks.

This thread is helpful. When I see recent timestamps, I know a new episode is probably available at Comcast on Demand ;)

I was very disappointed with the use of a bald-look cap. The storyline, the scripts, the acting have totally pulled me in. They made me feel sad, worried, etc. Then they do something like this that screams, “FAKE!”

If they didn’t want to do it for real, they could have shown Kristina in hats, caps, or a wig without ever showing her without hair.

I read on an online review that they put Parenthood on the other night to get four episodes over fast to make way for Smash. Supposedly, NBC is much more invested in Smash than they are in Parenthood.

My sister is going through chemo and she is allowed to drink except not the day before a chemo session nor the day of or the next day. I actually loved the red wig on Kristina. The only storyline I am not particularly invested in is Julia and Joel’s adopted son and related issues. This is the only drama I watch on TV so I will be very sad if they discontinue it.

I just kept thinking that shaving her head at that point did not seem real. Cutting it into a very short pixie, yes. Spending money, no. Crosby having $5,000 to spare, no.
No Haddie at Holiday time, no. All in all a very weak episode.
PG, maybe.
Who was taking care of the baby?
Feel badly for Sid too. Not typical to adopt a child older than you birthchild. Have found this very strange from the beginning. ( I have a birth and an adopted). Do not understand the script writers on this. I would have found it more interesting if they had adopted a 3 year old who revealed problems–maybe even Max type problems or behaviour issues.
But this older kid thing?

So I rewound and listened a few times and Kristina definitely told Luke that she was 34 not 27. So she had Haddie when she was 16? Has this been revealed before? Or was she making that up? She seemed to be coming clean with everything else.

Yes, I caught the 34 thing also.

I think she was very flattered by the attention and that 34 was a lie.

“I just kept thinking that shaving her head at that point did not seem real. Cutting it into a very short pixie, yes.”

I think it just depends on the person. I had a family member who decided, once her hair starting coming out in clumps like Kristina’s, to get it over with and shave her head. She said it made her feel less sick to be bald than to have hair all over everything.

I caught the 34 thing too. I don’t think think she had Haddie at 16 so I think it was a lie.

Hearing that the season is wrapping up at the end of the month makes me wonder how the writers can even begin to address half the open story lines. Hank & Sarah - I don’t care; Amber & Ryan - please help and show a positive example; pregnancy scare - so much other ground to cover. Don’t short change Kristina’s cancer and the effect on her family or the adoption situation. The writing is so excellent, I hate to see the season short changed.

Yep, not a great episode.

Yeah this episode was frustrating for all the non-realistic reasons given:

No way would Jasmine’s mom be that irresponsible with her money. Plus, I thought she owned a house anyway. And no way would they have $5k to spare, weren’t they just scraping by with the Luncheonette?

Wouldn’t Julia and Joel have been undergoing some sort of therapy or counseling with Victor? I don’t think the social services would just drop him there and let them decide how to handle questions like seeing his birth mother.

I did hear Kristina say she was 34 but I totally thought that was a fun fib she was telling herself. I thought the red wig looked okay for what it was.

Why don’t these people talk calmly some times - when Adam brought home the “dolly parton” blond wig, why did she jump all over him and tell him he must think she was hideous. That is obviously so not true. Even considering the stress of the cancer, it just didn’t seem real.

I can’t decide if Crosby was being too selfish in not wanting to give up his “man cave” to Renee or what. Sure, no one wants to host their MIL, but he did sound like a baby. On the other hand, it was all decided so quick and rushed, I couldn’t believe they didn’t plan their strategy out a little more thoroughly.

But all in all, it’s a TV show and very distracting from my real life. (On Christmas at the in laws, my H kept saying “why do you watch Parenthood? Real life is stressful enough!”) :)

Really, it’s just a TV show. I lost faith in the reality of the show when Amber applied to ONE college, UC Berkeley. And of course she didn’t get in. End of college plans for Amber. She went to the same high school as Haddie; not like they don’t have guidance counselors!

Last year the new episodes ended at the end of February too. I guess that’s just how they schedule them.

re: murmur that’s why I stopped watching after last season. They wrapped the storylines up and at that time it was unknown whether the series would continue. But they pushed the envelope to put it back on and tried again this season. It’s “fun” to read the comments here, but not enough to get me watching these random and somewhat improbable storylines this season. I wonder if the writers even have the energy or desire to wrap up the storylines this time.
