The problem will be that we have no way of knowing who the dad is now. She could lie about the timing of when she slept with whom and there’s no way to prove whose it might have been. We don’t now that she broke it off with college boy immediately upon having sex with Drew.

Totally agree…I just think that there may be an ambiguity here and that may be intentional. That’s all. And in TV land, we may find out who the father is as part of a plot twist.

OK, Sarah is cute but WHAT is making Mark and Hank fight over her in this pitbull-ish way?
She doesn’t deserve either of them.

Grow up Sarah!

What does it matter, given that the baby was (apparently) aborted?

Even if Drew was the father, he was in no position to step up to the role of fatherhood. Sure, in Hollywood-story-land, the baby could be adopted by his mom or his sister or his aunt and everyone could live happily ever after… but in the real world, you have two high school kids who are in no way ready for the responsibilities of parenthood.

The point is, they generally do a fost-adopt placement in those situations. It’s understood from the outset that the fost-adopt parents are interested in adoption, but won’t be making up their minds until after a trial period – which generally involves the social worker reporting back to court at periodic intervals as to progress.

No, the social worker wouldn’t be doing regular visit, but the kid would stay on the caseload and the parents would be encouraged to participate in family counseling.

Yes, social workers want to make placement but they aren’t stupid enough to want to make placements that are doomed to fail because of poor planning and preparation.

RU-486 can be given up to week #9. They didn’t show what happened when Amy went into the room to have the procedure – it could have been a matter of getting the initial medication. (A route to an abortion that apparently costs $300-$800 - see [Abortion Pill - Cost of Abortion Pill - Medication Abortion](The Abortion Pill | Get the Facts About Medication Abortion) ) Apparently it is appropriate protocol for the oral medication to be administered at the clinic. A young woman who had taken the initial dose would not have immediate signs of being under the weather – that would happen with the 2nd dose.

A surgical aspiration abortion could take place up to 16 weeks (stretching the time line) – but also would not take place during the first clinic visit. (Probably TMI for most, but the cervix needs to be dilated first – see [What Happens During an Abortion - In-Clinic Abortion Cost](In-Clinic Abortion Procedure | Abortion Methods) for the details you probably don’t want to know)

Of course, to the extent that script writers might want an out, technical accuracy is their friend – both procedures require a step 2 and theoretically a young woman could do step 1 and change her mind before step 2 – though in either case the first step is going to dramatically increase the likelihood of miscarriage.

I must have stepped out of the room…I did not realize Amy and Drew went back to the clinic a second time–I thought all the emotion was around the decision-making and that Amy was leaning towards abortion. I may just have to go back and rewatch!

As someone said upthread, I try to not take a very critical eye to the show. I enjoy watching and feel connected to the characters, recognizing that it’s a drama/soap opera and take it as such.

Having said that, the story line that’s frustrating me the most is the one with Victor. His feelings of anger, missing his mom, etc. are completely understandable and it doesn’t appear there’s ever been a discussion about whether he’s able to see his mom, have contact with her, etc. Somehow he’s just supposed to accept Julia as “mom”–very unrealistic, regardless of how dysfunctional or difficult his life may have been when the biological mom was in the picture. Julia was so understanding when he was angry about school and came up with a plan that worked–don’t mean to make it sound simplistic but starting with a discussion addressing his main issue (around his biological mom), and adding individual and family counseling would be realistic.

The second most annoying issue with this last episode was around Crosby’s MIL. True, Crosby was a little immature but, well, he IS immature! How about talking to the MIL (name escapes me at the moment) and asking her not to spend 45 minutes in what appears to be the only bathroom in the house during a time when everyone’s trying to get ready. And why can’t Crosby, an adult in his own home, say, “I appreciate that you made a plate for me but I don’t eat fish and I’ll be having something else” as well as “I can see it was difficult for you to wait until I got home from work to have dinner but having family dinner together important to us and we’ve agreed that we wait until everyone’s home to eat Tomorrow we’ll be eating together as a family at the time I arrive home. If you’re unable to wait, I’ll understand if you need to eat on your own”. Really, having to tiptoe around a guest in your own home who’s being incredibly insensitive and oblivious is nuts.

OK, rant over! (Maybe my eye is pretty critical after all!)

I’m siding with Crosby on the MIL thing (her name is Renee, I believe, collage).

If you’ve never had to deal with a pushy MIL, you have no idea what a difficult dynamic it is. The scene with her practically spooning fish into Crosby’s mouth? Been there, done that. While I was in a hospital bed. Why can’t she accept Crosby’s decision to not eat fish? That scene really resonated with me. And Crosby is being too nice to set a boundary, and Jasmine refuses to stand up to her mom and side with her dh. Even Jasmine, you could tell, was exasperated with her not taking the job.

We are just catching up w/ this show via Netflix streaming, and just watched the scene where Crosby was bidding Jasmine good bye as she packed up and got ready to move to NY. Crosby had been advised by his dad to “Man up” and be a father to his son (who has just asked to call him Daddy). Whew - I thought the scene where C. teared up and told Jasmine to stop packing and listen and he wanted to be a father to his son was just amazing! The guy is trying so hard. My heart def. goes out to him … /cough mother of boys here/ cough. I do look forward to seeing how this all plays out.

I seem to enjoy one or two scenes each episode and that keeps me watching. The one that made me burst into laughter was Max’s “I washed my armpits, butt, and balls.” The big man on campus type of music and his swagger really topped it off for me. The whole scene reminded me of asking my son to spin around, so I could check the fit of the seat of some new pants he was trying on. Priceless…

Drew went with Amy for the consultation. He heard them say she had a week to decide. I am sure that somewhere in that meeting they mentioned how many weeks along she was. I don’t see how there would be confusion about that.

They didn’t have an abortion. (Right to Life groups would boycott the show…instant death for the show.) Baby will get adopted by (sorry I am forgetting the characters’ names) Victor’s parents. Victor will either cause a separation or he will go back to his mother who has straightened out her life THEN amid tears there will be a new baby. Renee was the total package of a successful single mother. She had her own home…modest…but hers. She worked at one place for 30 years? She doesn’t get retirement? And everything fell apart in…five days? Sarah has few emotions other than befuddlement, giggly or inappropriate interest of things that don’t concern her.

As for the little girl who suddenly had a brother, her age and with issues? Sydney was the prototype of a very bright, mature only child. She was secure…and then she gets a brother (not the baby she was “promised” but someone in her age, with problems, and her life goes yakadoodle? People…remember how your oldest felt when they were dethroned? Or for those of us who had siblings? I remember some…challenging behavior from my oldest. And the difference in age wasn’t 8 years, it was 3 years.

Is it a boy or a girl?

Sydney was never mature. She always was a brat.

Mature behavior and bratty behavior are not exclusive. How many kids eat their vegetables (not because she likes them but because she “has” to eat them), do their homework without acting out (how many times have we seen her sitting at the breakfast bar do her homework without incidences? Sydney may not be your cup of tea…but she is the prototype for her mother’s personaltiy: driven to perfection.

Friday Night Lights - the darling of middle America - had a character who had an abortion and I don’t recall boycotts.

There was an abortion storyline on Friday Night Lights, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they also had one on this show. I don’t think it would kill the show.

mimk, I don’t think there’s any confusion about how far along she was. The question is whether she and Drew were having sex at the time the child was conceived,i.e., is Drew the father?

If you’ve been watching the show regularly, please forgive the repeat:

Amy went away for the summer. When she came back, she dumped Drew. He found out Amy had a new boyfriend when he brought a gift for her to her house and a guy a few years older who goes to UCal-Berkeley was at Amy’s house and acted like a boyfriend. He was really condescending to Drew.

Drew was really miserable when Amy dumped him. Everything in his life was going wrong. Amy asked what was the matter and Drew said he was living with Mr. Cyr which was really weird and mentioned that his Aunt Kristina had breast cancer. Before you know it, Amy and Drew were back in the sack together.

We know that the EPISODE in which Kristina announced to the family that she had cancer aired October 9. Parenthood was on hiatus for a while. I’m not sure that the episodes of the show correlate perfectly with real time. Thus, it is is a bit murky as to whether Drew is the dad.

Calmom asks why it matters since the pregnancy was terminated. Lets remember this is fiction. It could matter to the plot if Drew learns he wasn’t the father and Amy knew it and let him think he was…especially so he’d help her come up with the $. In the scene with Amber, Drew is distraught. He wants Amy to have the child. You really think Drew will think it’s “no big deal” if Amy lied to him?

I don’t think there’s any question that she had the abortion. It was clearly the second trip to the clinic, and why would she have asked Drew how she looked before going into her house afterwards?

TV time rarely coincides with real time. On this show, there is less obvious relation to week to week time than on others.

Remember the waiting room scene? The one with a young woman who was waiting without emotional support? She suddenly got up and left. The other woman clearly changed her mind…

Yes, she seemed to change her mind. I don’t get your point.
