Who has taken the AP music theory exam? Do you really need to take an AP theory class first, or does several years of instrumental music experience make studying for the exam pretty easy?

You ABSOLUTELY need to take the class first. I’ve played piano for 10 years, I had an A in the class all year, and was pretty good but had some issues with the ear training, and I got a 2.

You need the class to prepare you for the specific ear training exercises that make up 50% of the exam. You need the whole year to prepare for writing out 4 part harmonies after hearing something played twice. The ear training is unbelievably difficult.

You also need to learn the specific terms and concepts that will be tested.

But even if you didn’t care about the exam grade, it’s still a great class because you get so much better at listening.

the problem is that my school doesn’t offer AP music theory…maybe I’ll find a course outside of school. But anyway, thank you :)

Why dont you just…not take it?? Problem solved

yeah or that
