son is oos and has a 32 act now, taking it again today. have already sent the previous score to pitt. in reading past posts, although essay and lor are optional, for best consideration of merit they are recommended. which is better? get the app in by oct 1 (which seems to be an important date) or do an essay and lor and maybe get there shortly after that date…(know we can send updated act score if does better on today’s test)

Good question…

They say that they will reconsider applications if better scores are added later, but I am not convinced that they really re-review anything. That would be a lot of work.

lkf think we could probably get the lor there before that date, but he is dragging his feet on essays …i think he would be willing to whip the application out without the essay but it will not get there by the 1st if he sends an essay. on the website the scholarship deadlines are much later than oct 1st but posts here seem to stress that date?? i’m leaning towards, sending it in by mid october with everything ie lor, essay and an updated act (fingers crossed) if better than the 32, then it goes as one package, rather than hoping they will re-review everything.

I don’t think October 1 is a magic number. Last year, my daughter applied after that date and did get merit money.

update new score is 33 wgpa 4.13, , letter of rec requested, and app ready to submit except for essay. how important is that essay for merit consideration? i read some past posts and seems some people regretted submitting essay at this level as had to write more essays for scholarships? ,

If the application asks for an essay for scholarship consideration, then I would send one in. It would be terrible if you lost out on a scholarship just because you were missing an essay. Is there an essay already written that can be tweaked for Pitt?

There is an additional essay for the Chancellor’s Scholarship, which is the full-ride scholarship. But don’t let that affect your initial Pitt application. Cross that bridge when and if you come to it.

I would recommend to do as strong an application as possible from the get-go. My daughter applied in mid to late November and received scholarship money (two years ago though). I remember my daughter used her Common App essay, because the Pitt essay questions were pretty open-ended. That may have changed, so check the requirements carefully.

thanks for the input! app has been ready except for essay for a while and guess i was just anxious for him to hit the submit button!

I remember the feeling! LOL Hang in there.

^^^ you mean at some point we will laugh over all this???
