Apple: Yes, we're slowing down older iPhones

I downloaded the app battery life (it was recommended by USA today) and showed my battery life. I don’t have anything in my settings. I have a 7

Don’t iphones automatically backup that stuff like Android phones do? To the cloud?

@Nrdsb4 In your case I would find a local smart phone repair place to make the transfer for you. It sounds like it would be worth it to do it that way, for peace of mind.

I’m not sure what could be “corrupted” in your phone that would not allow an update. When you get a new device you have the option of either setting it up as new (with nothing personal on it) or from an existing backup (assuming you’ve been doing that). I don’t know if problems would carry over to the new device, or just the data like contacts, etc.especially if you update the new phone to a newer IOS first.

I guess you’ve tried all the stuff everyone suggests, like a hard reset?

Does anyone know if the icloud keychain automatically saves passwords or if I have to manually add each one? Ugh. That would be a pain.
I had apple support test my battery remotely and yes, I qualify for the battery replacement (my battery is at 75%- anything below 80 qualifies). They test the # of battery cycles. . They will have the results of the diagnostics in my account so they wont have to test it again when I go for my appointment Friday. Just have to hope they have batteries in stock (there are more “on order” but no guarantees…). But, if they dont have then in stock they will order one for me. Its just that the last time I headed to that apple store is when I broke my ankle, so I am a bit skiddish…

So here is another thing about my situation: When I bought my phone several years ago, my D set up my cloud account. She used her school email, which was a dumb move. Anyway, since she graduated from that school years ago, that email is no longer valid, so there is no way to sign in to our cloud account.

Maybe apple can help you change the email address?? Surely you cant be the first person who has had this problem…

^^^I know; really I just need to make an appointment at the Apple store and be prepared to be there a while. I just was waiting until the after Christmas rush calmed down.

Something is clearly wrong with the phone. A lot of my apps don’t work. You pull it up, it shows for just a brief moment, then immediately disappears. Sometimes you can get them to work if you push them enough times. Don’t know why they finally work. My CNN app keeps telling me that version needs to update. When you push “OK,” it takes you to the app update center and it says you are already updated.

@Nrdsb4 You could try calling Apple about the icloud issue. You might have to make a phone appointment with a specific division (I think there’s one that helps people recover passwords and such). Hopefully you can remember your secret questions and answers?

Here are some suggested things to try. I apologize if you’ve already tried them:
Have you tried deleting the troublesome apps and reinstalling them? I would only do one that way as a test. Doing a hard reset of your phone - holding down the home button and side button until the Apple logo comes on and let it reboot? Doing a screen share with Apple? They take over your phone and do some digging.

As I said, you might have better luck with a good local repair shop, especially if your phone is out of warranty and/or Applecare.

Do try the online/phone repair with Apple first. They can access your phone remotely and do diagnostics On it. If they can’t fix it remotely you can make an appointment to go into the store but you will already have a case number and the history of what Apple support has already done will he on file. Will Save you time.

Yeah, I do the hard reset of the phone all the time when I can’t make phone calls with all bars lit up, etc. Daily necessity.

You can also transfer data using iTunes. I don’t use iCloud and I had no problem transferring data when I got my new phone. Apple can walk you step by step.

^^I did the same thing as I don’t store stuff on iCloud.

We backed up my phone to the computer and to the cloud. Going in today to get the battery replaced. Hope they have one in stock.

Batter replacement pricing is now down to $29. I’m getting mine replaced next week.

My appointment for the battery replacement was today. But of course they were out of them and I am on the list to get one when they come in hopefully in 5 business days. But one of my speakers is bad and they want $129 to fix it. Nope. I can either get it fixed at a nearby repair place for $54.99 or I might go for an AT&T BOGO phone deal with my DH.

It kind of feels like a shakedown to upgrade. Everyone asks me why I don’t upgrade my 5S but I don’t see any advantage to paying money for a new phone. I like the small size (I’m not the only one that likes the smaller size) and I don’t see any improvements in the newer phones I would take advantage of. In fact the 7 apparently doesn’t have the earphone jack installed, you have to keep an auxillary piece with you to use the earbuds…my understanding is you can pay $1K+ to get that feature back - both phones are large I believe.

We are an all iPhone family but this is going to tick off a number of users to the point we may say goodbye to iPhones.

I have an iPhone with no earphone jack. You go with the wireless earphones. Think this is why they built them that way. You now have to buy yet another product.

I like my iPhone 6s; will get a new battery before end of 2018.

I don’t understand the hype about not having the earphone jack. It has an earphone jack. The power jack doubles function; it connects to power and the new ear phone. You can use the earphone just like in old days except when you charge. Don’t you switch to the new earphone when you get a new phone? If you do, you won’t notice any difference except when you charge. BTW the earphone jack isn’t coming back. It’s not in the $1K phone, either.

Or you go with the new earphone that comes with the new phone that fits into the charge port.

We switched our AT&T account to a business account to take advantage of some of the deals they were offering on the new phones and it has been a royal PITA. ARGGGHHH.
