Just moved into a newly constructed house. So far, the ice maker on the Subzero refrigerator hasn’t worked, and the Bosch dishwasher doesn’t work at all. My daughter just bought me a Nespresso machine for Christmas (subsidized by me) and we thought we’d try it out early – doesn’t work. We followed instructions to the letter for the cleaning cycle and the water doesn’t flow from the dispenser into the tank.

What is it with me and appliances? Has anyone else had consistent problems with new appliances? I’m pulling my hair out because dealing with repair persons during Christmas week with no time off from work before the 25th is a big pain. Especially since I’m having a house full of guests. Grr.

Not new appliances-but we have repaired the subzero ice maker two ( maybe three ) times in 14 years and always breaks within months of repair. We gave up use ice trays.

I’ve heard rumors of Subzeros not having good performance and needing frequent repairs. Seems to me that if they want to maintain their reputation, they’d improve the performance of small things like the ice maker.

Nottelling- appliances have become far less reliable than they used to be. I have had to replace major ones (stove, fridge and microwave/high end ones) within 5 years. Aggravating! Have a friend who went through 3 new expresso machines while under warrantee to find the one that works. This at a $600 price point.

Don’t have an answer, but do have empathy. Good luck! I keep receipts and now have even bought service plans for some new appliances. That used to be considered a waste, yet now it seems inevitable to need something.

My 18 year subzero never needed repairs. We didn’t use the ice maker until last year. I wasn’t sure if it will work after so many years. It did!

Subzero - the old ones worked like a hammer, apparently. The newer generation is not great according to what I read.

Bosch - I had a Bosch DW which never worked well. Apparently, the company had a redesign, since the posters who bought one recently are happy with theirs.

Nespresso - take it back for an exchange while it still can be done or call and complain.

Seriously, as to ice maker, these are often poorly plumbed and someone needs to check the entire connection because the problem can be at the spot where the little water tube comes into the fridge. (It’s usually a flexy thing.) The dishwasher, if it doesn’t work but turns on and shows error codes (numbers usually), likely needs a new control board because nearly everything that can go wrong is on that. If it doesn’t dry, the heat circuit on the control board has failed and since the thing is new the board should be replaced not repaired. If it doesn’t work at all, probably the same thing, a failed control board, because a main alternative would be something stupid like they didn’t manage to wire it correctly.

I agree: return the Nespresso for a new one.

I am on my second Bosch DW. I am happy with a Bosch. It’s quiet, cleans well, didn’t need repairs. It just stopped working one day after 11 years. We didn’t try to fix it. Got a new one about a year ago. The new one works even better.

“The dishwasher, if it doesn’t work but turns on and shows error codes (numbers usually), likely needs a new control board because nearly everything that can go wrong is on that”

Incorrect, says Mr B who has experience with fixing appliances. Error codes are part specific. It might need a new valve in the pump or something like that. The manual would tell what system could be involved and a possible replacement part.

Our seven year old SubZero is working just fine, but we’re on our third Wolf range in as many years. The Bosch dishwasher was replaced with a much cheaper brand that’s just as quiet and performs better. I also buy extended warranties on appliances after learning how much electronic parts replacement cost.

Our Bosch dishwasher started leaking when it was less than two years old. The repirman stopped the leak, but warned us it was just a temporary fix and we should start looking for a new dishwasher. So I bought a cheap DW and stuck it in the basement until it was needed. Well, that was two or three years ago! The Bosch is working fine now.

The Bosch dishwasher that came with our new house works no better than the mid-range GE we had in our old place. Either I’m not sophisticated enough to tell the difference – or else an expensive dishwasher does… pretty much the same thing as a mid-range one.

Thanks, everyone! The dishwasher beeps non-stop and just a little water comes in but then nothing happens other than the beeping. (Only supposed to beep at end of cycle). So frustrating! My old basic GE appliances worked fine for 20 years. Didn’t choose appliances for this new place, but I was excited to be upgrading to fancy ones. Thanks for listening to me vent.

I’ve already complained about the stacking Bosch Axis washer and dryer here on this forum. They are so frustrating that I’m having electrical, plumbing and gas hookups installed in garage for full-sized vented units.

I’ll be using range, microwave and built in grill for first time this week; hopefully I won’t have more complaints!

I think the older appliances were made better. We have a washer and dryer that are 25+ years old (Maytag). The washer had two service calls because the tenant left the door open and a rat bit through the bleach hose. Argh!

Just recently, we had a service call on the dryer for the first time. The belt broke and was promptly replaced. Had him look at the washer, while he was here, because it seemed slightly out of balance. He took it apart and then reassembled it. It stopped making noise but started leaking, so he had to replace the large gasket and rim. Am hoping it will now go for another 25 years!

The mechanic agreed that the older appliances seem sturdier and have fewer service calls than the newer ones.

Our Bosch dishwasher is very quiet and has not given us problems–knocking wood!

My experience with a Wolf range has been goof. It is the only high-end appliance in my house that hasn’t been repaired. It’s 12 years old. I’ve had to have work on several SubZ appliances–wine cooler, ice maker (separate unit) and a refrigerator (have a matching (freezer, no problem with it).

SubZero did give me a $200 credit on the repair of the wine cooler because the part that I needed was still under warranty. The appliance repair guy was the one who told me to call SubZ and tell them that I had lots of SubZ appliances and ask if they could do something. Wouldn’t have known to do that if the appliance guy hadn’t suggested it. I did register my appliances when I got them so SubZ had a record of the purchases.

Maybe I should have been more specific: problems with a brand new Bosch dishwasher probably mean the control board and/or it’s fitting are the problem. In a running machine that develops a problem, error 4 means one thing, error 3 means something else, etc.

There have been many threads on dishwashers. I think much is preference and the only requirements are a hidden heating element (so you can put plastic in anywhere) and being quiet (but not down to the lowest possible decibels).
