application queries: please answer spring 2012 applicantss

Hi I am a 12th passed student who secured 84% in the Boards and a 1790 in my SAT.I am having some trouble with the application. Firstly how are we supposed the recommendations online? Is it through the commonapp? Secondly what all comes under ECs? For example I have won one or two prizes in the school for oration and was the vice president of one of the houses. Does that count? Or does it have to be at national level or something?
Lastly I am thinking of taking an SAT coaching to increase my score? Suggest any?

P.S. I intend to apply for spring 2012

Oops one more thing I did my 9th and 10th from one school and 11th and 12th from the other. Do I need recs from both?

Colleges only care to see that you performed well your 9th and 10th grade year. They focus their attention at 11th and 12th because recommendations from those years are what they need. If you send a rec from a teacher you had for 9/10th only…that will seriously not impress them. So, no, I would not advise you scuttle through a teacher list for your beginning years.

  1. Recommendations: Yes, it is through CommonApp. Whatever teacher(s)/counselors you are asking, you need to know their emails. If they don’t have emails…tell them that they need to have one. Once that is taken care of, you write down the emails of all the teachers under the recommendation tab and send a request for each college one by one.
  2. ECs: anything that you did after school. If you helped a teacher, it goes under volunteer tab. If it was a program that you helped out in, then it would be an EC. Sports also count for EC.
-Oration prizes would go under award unless that was a club.
-VP of house is an EC where you earned a leadership position.
Having won national awards is great but not necessary. If you really are a great speech person, then your essay will shed some light on your talent.

Yes, you definitely need to raise that score. I am out of my elements when ppl ask for coaching classes, because I’ve had no experience under that criteria. However, you should buy the blue book (collegeboard) to improve your score. It is very straightforward and lends test problems that come straight from ETS. While you are having the classes, it would be ideal for you to purchase that text. I would say that you should buy from amazon to get cheaper deals that won’t cost a lot.

Thanks a lot !1:)
