A Colgate alum email I got said they had “over 7,800” applications. It seems like they have a pattern of surge followed by decline as they had over 8,000 apps for the first time three years ago, followed by a decline the next year when most schools were up, followed by a huge advance last year, followed by a huge decline this year.

It’s amazing how such similar schools with a high normal cross-over of candidates like Williams and Amherst can be so different in the rate of change of applications this year (-1% vs -21%). I guess it was an especially bad year for the rural LACs with Middlebury down ~12%, although somehow Dartmouth wasn’t negatively affected. Maybe, they are perceived to have much better financial aid.

Has anyone seen data for Bates, Trinity College, or Connecticut College?

Wake Forest magazine notes that applications increased by 14% over last year’s total of 9050.

gellino,
Dartmouth may be a rural LAC, but it is an IVY LEAGUE rural LAC, and thus, has not suffered from the “Is it worth it?” syndrome that Colgate, Williams, et al have. And it is truly need-blind for all applicants.

The Wake Forest web site now says that applications growth this year is 16%, rather than the 14% I mentioned earlier (figure from the WFU magazine).
