My significant other is currently enrolled to attend Kalamazoo College this fall. I’m currently a junior in high school, a year behind him. A while back, before he had made his decision but after he had been accepted, he told me that he thought I would really like Kzoo, and that he thought it would be a good fit for me. I was a bit skeptical, but in light of recent financial issues (my parents aren’t paying for my college and I won’t qualify for grants; only merit scholarships and loans) and after seeing how much financial aid Kzoo gave him, I’ve decided to apply in the fall. (Not to mention, they have a free application fee.) However, what if I get accepted? I feel like his attendance to that school - whether we’re together or not by the time I have to choose - will affect my choice. What if I choose to go, if we’re still together? I feel like my family/friends will judge me on this decision and was wondering what everyone’s opinion was.
Hi, in all honesty, you shouldn’t make your college decision solely based on your significant other. I would recommend you to visit the campus and see if you like it and if it’s a good fit for you. I know a couple of people who chose to attend a certain school just because their gf/bf went there, and guess what ended up happening? They broke up. I’m not saying that this will be your case, but you have to really think about it and make a wise decision. If you loved their academics and the campus after visiting and they gave you good aid, then attend regardless if you two are still together or not. If I was you, I would look at what school is the best fit for you and gives you good money. But it is up to you.
Good luck!
@iloveuwmandum Yes, I realize that I shouldn’t make my decision based off of my significant other, and I won’t. I was asking if I should even bother applying there, or if I should just take a look at different colleges instead. Thanks!
It’s ok to apply there and consider it as an option especially if they might give you the aid you need. Together or not at the time, you won’t be the only two on campus and you will be in different years. Consider it like you would any other college.
@123Mom456 Okay, thank you so much!
Yeah, I think you should apply there. It’s a good school, and they give good aid. My EFC is a little high, but I still got decent money from them. I know people who had a lower EFC and they got a lot of money from the school. Right now it is my cheapest option, so I might go there.
