Hi there!
I’m a current student at a T30-T40 boarding school. However, I’ve realised that the schools fee is lot of money (15k-20k more than other T20-T30 schools). The resources and faculty it provides are very little. I’m interested in science and research, however there is 2 biology teacher and no lab for research or any of the adequate resources to support students interested in science. Many of the stem teachers are open about how they are unwilling to teach. (Note, my interviewers and the website stated differently)
The student environment is incredibly toxic.
I don’t know if those are good enough reasons, but it feels like I’m not getting anything out of my experience there. My school mentors tell me to just push through with it but it feels like I’m sacrificing so much for so little in return.
As a rising sophomore, I’m aiming to apply for junior year to a few schools (T10-T20), however upon reading more information, it is highly competitive and most people re-class.
Should I still consider applying (if I’m adamant about not reclassing)?
I’d consider applying to schools that are not necessarily T10-T20, (although I don’t even know what list you are using), but to schools that specifically have the labs and classes you are seeking. As a transfer, they will wonder why you want to switch and you need to be able to show them specifics. If you want to escape the “toxic culture” cast a wider net and look for the hidden gems that have great science programs.
While most students graduate from the BS at which they start, there are students who transfer. If you are unhappy with your current school, transferring-- even at 11th – is an option.
You will need to be very intentional about the schools you consider and be clear that they offer, both culturally and academically, what your current one does not (and what youwant). AOs are receptive to this type of application, including for junior year.
I fully agree with @vwlizard that your odds will be much better if you can identify schools that are outside the list of usual suspects.
Hello. I was a junior applicant last year so I may be able to provide some insight. Our situations are different but hopefully I can help. Firstly, it seems like your reasons for wanting to transfer are perfectly valid. You have to worry about yourself and your experience so don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
Junior year is definitely a tough year for applicants but not impossible (I was lucky enough to make it). I’m not sure if being a transfer makes it easier or harder, but it seems to be common enough. I applied to a couple of the “top” schools including GLADCHEMMS and was waitlisted at most. A lot of my friends were too.
The other replies in this thread are right that you shouldn’t be paying so much attention to rank and more to the offerings, facilities, etc. that you’re currently missing. Something schools like to do for 11th grade applicants is ask why them and why at this point. It helps a lot to have a clear and personal answer.
I personally think that you need to do a ton of research before deciding to apply anywhere. As you well know, marketing materials can be misleading, and I’d hate for you to end up in the same or worse position than you’re in now. Lemme know if I can answer any more questions.
