hooks-mother very sick from colorectal cancer, all housework falls on me, which caused a drop in my grades, followed by a rise. my friends and I tried to get my school to run AP bio, succeeded.

What are my chances of getting in, and what should I improve on if they are low? If I forgot to add anything, don’t hesitate to ask.

everything looks really solid to me. i would us reccomend to try to keep that gpa up. you are taking strong classes and are involved in good ECs, which should help you. ok this is probably a stupid question, but what does superscore mean? and i wouldnt mind a chance back  http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/861966-chance-me-please-cmu-cornell-wvu-others.html

superscore is the combination of the highest sections of the sat that you’ve taken. An example of a superscore would be an 800 in math being counted, despite the fact that you had a 700 the previous time. I don’t even know why I wrote that, I only took it once.

will chance back

I agree with blueandgold. It will still be a low reach because it is very competitive. However, I would not be surprised if you were accepted. Your GPA and SAT look good and your hooks and ED application could put you over the top. Good luck!

thanks for the comments so far

more opinions would be nice, please.

Everything looks pretty good. Your upward trend in grades will impress the Columbia. SAT score is great. It’s a reach for anyone but I think you have a fighting chance. Good luck!

alright, so as I can see, I’m on solid ground and the only thing left is to maintain high numbers. k, thanks.

I think it’s a reach, and not a low one. Columbia is incredibly difficult to get into; their applicant pool is extremely strong. I don’t know if you have the SAT scores, the GPA or the ECs to be accepted. You should work on your ECs and on your GPA.

Chance me back please!

thanks for the opinions.

I would recommend doing at least 1 more SAT II just to make up a bit for GPA, but besides that your ECs look really good and I really wouldnt worry …some notoriously difficult schools will be an obvious reach for pretty much anyone

From the info you’ve given I can see that you’re very interested in math/science (correct me if I’m wrong) because it shows through the subject tests you’re planning on taking, your courses, extracurriculars, and activities… it’s a good thing and I encourage you to keep that up. However, I do think that while your SAT is very good, if you can, then try to boost it up above 2200/2250.

I’m really sorry to hear about your mother’s illness. My dad was diagnosed with colon cancer when I was a sophomore and high school has been incredibly difficult for me-- I understand how hard it is to juggle caring for your parent/family members, intense school work, and activities. One thing I’d encourage you to do is tell your counselor about this (if you’re comfortable with doing so, of course). I’m not saying this so that you can gain ‘pity points’ thru his/her recommendation, but I am very close with my school counselor whom I’ve confided in about my dad’s illness/my struggles and he discussed it in my college recommendation and explained how it had & has affected my academic performance.

I admire your strength very much and I hope you are accepted ED!

thanks for the help so far.

It’s iffy. It’s a reach, not a high one. Your numbers and EC are are better than the average applicant, but no where near the top. Columbia only takes the top 15% of applicants, so being in the “average good” range (75%ile) is probably not good enough. Hopefully your ED will boost you into the top 15%. GL!

What race are you?
