<p>My teacher today told us my friend was in the ICU. The teacher does not know if it’s a long term disease or if it’s something curable. But she used the term gravely ill. I just know her from school so I don’t really know too much about the situation. I want to write a letter to her expressing how much of a great person she is, and that I wish her well. But as I do not know the magnitude of the situation, I feel it might not be wise to say “get well soon.” What should I say instead? Is it appropriate to write something humorous with inside jokes in this situation?</p>
<p>Yes. As someone who has been in that situation (the one in the hospital), I can tell you that humorous cards were the best things I ever got. They made me laugh and gave me more hope than you could possibly imagine. I wouldn’t say get well soon, but I would say (if either of you are religious) that you’re praying for her and that you are all thinking of her. If you could get a bunch of people together to make cards (yes, homemade cards like from kindergarten) and delivery them, it would make her week. Trust me, there is nothing like getting homemade cards to make the hospital seem so much more like home. Letters are nice, but they don’t quite give you the same cheer as colorful kid-like cards. </p>
