April 2012 Reading Discussion

The question asked which was the first person to create fixed image, no?

The first fixed image was Daguerre but I’m not sure if it said Fixed.

Does anyone remember a question about the lady botanist or the main idea of her story or impact ? I faintly remember not sure what it was.

^ I think I put it talks about nature… something of that sort. something about multiple scientists and nature… I can’t remember it for verbatim.

I actually thought that the narrator was “skeptical” of the lady botanist. There was something in the passage where the beginning of a paragraph was, “If we are to believe the pictures in ____'s diary to be accurate, …” Am I alone? Lol

i thought it said fixed, though I may be wrong

I hope it said fixed…that would be Daguerre I suppose. Oh well we will find out, the questions will never be posted right? I mean not until it’s released to everyone?

what about the one that asked about merian? I believe I narrowed down the two choices to either talking about the historical significance of Merian and the other choice was something along the lines of “describing a process observed by merian and how other scientists elaborated on it”. I chose the latter. any opinions?

I put the latter, i think it’s right, ~half of it was about merian, the other about the development of it by other scientists.

is that the same question as the main idea about the botanist or w/e?

I put that the narrator was neutral towards the botanist. Even though it was a bit admiring in the paragraph discussing her travels, it said something along the lines of “If her journals are to be believed” in the paragraph with quotations from her journal. Besides the travels section, the rest just seemed to outline her contributions and how things progressed over time with the other scientists.

I put
-Niecpe (sp)
-admiring
-wood
-reflected on role (If it were state of the company, much more of the focus would’ve been on the son jack who’s now running company)
-some people asked about the cork 3 main qualities were…it was the answer including cell components (It listed the main 3 in the introduction)
-scientists later elaborated (the change in focus from scientist to scientist meant this)

I remember some question about a mirror that i had trouble with…forgot what i put though. Maybe y’all could remind me of the question/answers?

-The narrator was admiring. S/he called Merian’s paintings “brilliant” and said that Merian’s ideas of evolution were advanced for the time.
-The bark is separate from the wood. The first sentence of the passage stated that.

And when I say evolution, I mean metamorphosis. Lol fail -.-

Does anyone remember all the passages in the reading section? Just the names… also, did any of you get C three times in a row on the second to last row on reading?

The question that had an external quote regarding the mirror of memory:

It was B which said Yes, D-guy would have supported it because his invention allows nature to reproduce itself.

On the other Mirror of memory question that said what it is, I put it allows one to keep an image etc. (not the one that said perspective of photographer; i was down between those two)

I did not put Niepce. Ugh. And I definitely think that the tone of the author for the metamorphosis question was neutral. There was definite skepticism “If the journals were correct…” (<– paraphrased) and even though the word brilliant was used, it wasn’t really used to describe the artist/biologist lady in general, just the effect that her paintings had on the author.
But for the Battles story-- I looked it up; Hank “the tank” was the father. ([Plot’s weak, but metaphor lets ‘Aloft’ soar | The Honolulu Advertiser | Hawaii’s Newspaper](<a href=“The Honolulu Advertiser - Island Life”>Plot's weak, but metaphor lets 'Aloft' soar | The Honolulu Advertiser | Hawaii's Newspaper)) That’s two I got wrong-- crossing my fingers that the curve won’t be too brutal… >.<

I’m at one wrong definitely, and I probably missed at least one on the cork passage. Banking that Hank the Tank was the narrator. -3 will not be pretty.

Regardless of being objective about the scientific work, the author was admiring Merian for even having the courage to explore nature given alone as early as she did. Author said something along the lines of “it was impressive that she went, and even more impressive that she did so as early as she did”
And being objective about her work is not changing his opinion on her, it’s being scientifically literate. Back with that faster-than-light report, people saying “Einstein might have been wrong” are in no way losing admiration of einstein…

Hank the Tank was the narrator’s father. 100%

For the question that had an external quote regarding the mirror of memory, does anyone remember all 4 answer choices?

B was something like: Yes, Deggure would have supported it because his invention allows nature to reproduce itself.
