APs as a freshman?

How common is it to see freshman take AP classes? What about sophomores? How many does AP classes one take on average in 9th and 10th grade?

It really differs from school to school. I know a lot of people take AP Human Geography (the easiest) Freshman year and then AP World History Sophomore year. That’s what I did.

So yes, it is very common.

Depends on your school. At my school (which is one of the specialized high schools in NYC), it’s fairly common to take an AP in sophomore or freshman year. I think the only AP offered in freshman year is World History, in sophomore year there’s AP World or AP Euro (you can also take AP Biology but I don’t think many people do so).

I didn’t take any as a freshman, but took Bio, World History, and Literature as a sophomore.

I took three AP’s my freshman year, I’m a rising sophomore now.
Calc BC, Physics B and Human Geography.
My case is pretty unique, most of my friends only took one (Human Geo) and two or three took 2 exams

My school doesn’t offer APs to freshman. Only a few sophomores take them, and usually it is US History, and usually those kids are really smart.

Oh, and as a sophomore at my school people tend to take three or two exams, World History, Biology (some of my friends are taking physics next year though) and some take Calculus AB.
I intend to take both Physics C’s, Stats and World History

I took AP Computer Science and AP US History last year, as a freshman

At lots of the schools in my area, it is normal for sophomores to take an AP history. A few sophomores take other exams, but not many – this year, six took Bio, one took Human Geo, and one took Calc.

I know of places where freshmen take Human Geo., but that’s not true where I live. People thought it was strange that I was taking AP exams as a freshman (Calc, Chem, French).

I know what you mean – I took APWH as a freshman, and some others as a sophomore. Although if you’re a native speaker, numberdance, taking AP French isn’t at all odd as a freshman (are you a native speaker? haha).

At my school, you can’t even take APs as a sophomore unless you’re a very special case; you’d have to have taken Alg II your freshman year so you could take Chem I that year, which would in turn let you take AP Chem II your sophomore year. Or, you could take AP Comp science your sophomore year. Otherwise, APs are reserved for juniors/seniors =/.

I took only APHG as a freshman. My sophomore schedule is consisting of AP Bio, Spanish Lang, and World History.

In my school, the only AP offered to freshman is AP World History, which is a two year course. For sophomores, there usually is very little as well…but that’s just my school. There are way too many kids to provide APs for, so the APs are “restricted” for juniors and seniors. A freshman/sophomore can still apply, but juniors and seniors get priority in getting accepted to an AP class.

The only AP classes that freshman or sophomores can usually take at my school are AP Chinese/AP Japanese (since we’re 75% Asian…) and AP Statistics (for people who took Algebra 2 in 8th or 9th grade and are willing to give up their only elective spot). A few people took AP Biology as sophomores in years before, but it has been disallowed now. Of course, there also those who take AP Calculus BC as sophomores because they’re that pro (or rather, were that pro in middle school… slightly bitter about not being allowed to skip). One of the two people who made the US IPhO team from our school last year took AP Physics B as a sophomore, but he’s really special. (I don’t know about the other IPhO person…)

A bunch of people do self-study APs during sophomore (and maybe freshman?) year, though; the ones that I know of did AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Comp Sci A, AP Human Geo, AP Music, and AP Physics (not all at once…). I only took 1 AP test through 9th and 10th grade: AP Physics B.

I don’t think there are any AP’s a freshman could take at my school. In fact, I was the only sophomore this year to take an AP class.

No APs for Freshmen here. My school is weird. I have some friends that went to another and are taking AP Spanish Lit their sophomore year while I’m taking Lang. soph year.

We were in the same levels of Spanish 8th grade.

My school doesn’t allow freshmen to take AP’s but a lot of sophomores start out by taking the easier ones like AP Environmental

Freshmen in AP classes is very uncommon at our school. There’s a really smart kid in the class of 2011 who did Calculus AB his freshman year (got a 5), and there were a few native speakers who took the AP in their native language as freshmen, but I don’t know of any others.

Sophomores generally take only 1 AP–AP European History. Unfortunately, the teacher sucks, so most kids have a bad first experience with AP (both with the class and the test). This year, I had a couple friends take 2 (Euro and a language or Euro and Physics B), and I was the only one who did more than 2 (I did 4–Euro, Physics B, French Lang, Calc BC).

We have freshmen in Ap Calc at my school…

Freshman can’t take AP at my school. Sophomores can only take AP US. After that basically everything else opens up.
