APUSH Study Game!

it’s like responsibility of women in colonial times to set moral examples (vs men’s drinking) for the family esp children, and something about churchgoing

Ok thanks, my apah teacher hasn’t mentioned that ever…

Populism: Inflated bimetal currency (silver and gold)
better opportunites for farmers
wanted gvnt to favor farmers

Progressivism: bust the trusts
better treatment for labor

those are just some general things…

Women started to form their own opinions about suffrage during the abolition movement - had the Dec. of Sentiments at the Seneca Halls Convention - 1866 made up part of the National Labour Union -Welcomed into the Knights of Labour - Finally secured the 19th Amendment in 1920 - Shedded some threads of conservatism during the 1920s with the Flapper image - WWII –> many women started working along with African Americans while the troops were fighting the war, although when the men came back, they were forced out of the jobs and into the homes - 1950s –> focused more on their responsibilities as mothers (conservatism that identified that decade - eventually with Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique, women started to repeal the ideas of conservatism once again - Civil Rights of 1965 Ended discrimination - Roe v Wade in 1973

Also important - Ronald Reagan electing Sandra Day O’ Connor and um…FDR electing Frances Perkins (I think?)

And I’m pretty sure there was a Cult of Domesticity somewhere early in the history.

This was in reference to trends of women through American History :)

progressive- against corruption…wasn’t there some social reforms too?

Anyone want to compare Reagan and Carter?

Muckraking was a big part of Progressivism.
Was Hull House part of it as well?

Reagan: Economic, fiscal responsibility, supply side economics…Iran-Contra Affair…

Carter: Dem. Favored human rights in foreign policy… Camp David Accords

yeah, hull house-jane adams, reform immigrant life

what were the major labor unions? like the AFL, knights of labor, etc.

yes, i believe so. a part of the progressive era was addressing the poverty and people like Jane Adams creating settlement houses.

i need clarification on the details and differences of the royal and charter colonies? what were their goals and why were they established? i don’t even know if they’re separate things.

Evolution of the labor movement (correct me if I’m wrong, I’m pulling this off the top of my head)
late 1800s -> Knights of Labor. They admitted both skilled and unskilled, men and women, and even minorities. They crumbled after the haymarket scandal, which damaged image of labor unions overall
late 1800s-early1900s -> AFL, leaded by Samuel Gompers. Union was opened only to skilled workers, which can be attributed to its relative success vs the knights of labor.
early 1900s -> Sherman anti-trust act is passed. largely ineffective since it wasnt really enforced
mid 1900s -> Clayton anti-trust act is passed, which actually had the power to enforce itself.
mid 1900s -> The Wagner Act is passed, giving huge amounts of rights to labor unions (gave them the right to bargain, organize, etc)

Those were the major two - then you also have Industrial Workers of the World as well as AFL-CLIO

Knights-haymarket square, accused of anarchism, skilled and unskilled, children and women in union too?
AF of L-skilled labor, merged with CIO

Taft-Hartley Act outlaws closed shop-big blow to unions…

Pullman Strike too
Eugene V Debs too!

royal colonies are where the governors are sent directly by the crown
charter colonies, aka joint-stock company-colonies are for-profit colonies which have been chartered and approved by the crown of england

Er…

What was the Cuban Missile Crisis?

USSR has long range missile stationed in communist Cuba. US plane or w/e flies over and sees them. Kennedy demands the missiles be removed… USSR doesn’t back off… so U.S. forms a naval blockade around Cuba. Eventually, USSR removes missiles, U.S. removes missiles from Turkey and says it won’t invade Cuba.

Can someone explain the various strikes that were significant, i completely forgot Pullman strike or when that was

to start with, I remember TR medated the anthracite Coal miners strike

Great RR strike–baltimore & ohio rr cut wages; in wv; federal troops come in

Pullman strike–i believe in Chicago, pullman cart workers strike because of wage cuts, federal troops, debs arrested

Haymarket riot–there was a bombing, 8 anarchists were tried, some convicted, discredited knights of labor

Homestead Strike–steel workers strike against carnegie steel comp. in pittsburgh, pinkertons come, pa state militia

QUESTION: who wrote star-spangled banner?

Francis Scott Key. Is that really important, though?

Which party favored silver more in the late 1870s?
